Binds to an enzyme in the presence of acidic gastric pH, preventing the final transport of hydrogen ions into the gastric lumen. Indicated for the treatment of GERD.

Hypersensitivity

Common side effects headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, hyperglycemia,

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) none

Lab value alterations caused by medicine May cause abnormal liver function tests, including increased AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, and bilirubin

Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Avoid alcohol, asparin, NSAIDS, report black tarry stools, diarrhea, or abdominal pain

Nursing Process- Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) Assess for erosive esophogitis, level of pain, and black tarry stools, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.

Assessment Why would you hold or not give this med? I would consult the physician if the pt was experiencing intolerable side effects such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, or tarry stools.

Evaluation Check after giving Signs of healing of the esophagus and the pt’s level of comfort
