MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I’m thrilled to present you with the inaugural issue of the Prosserman JCC program guide. As you leaf through this guide, I am sure you’ll be amazed at the breadth and diversity of our programming. These programs reflect the dynamism of our new JCC, a place for the community to learn, be engaged, have fun and interact with one another. The Prosserman JCC celebrates the diversity of Jewish life in Toronto. A vibrant community such as ours – one that is continually growing and changing – needs vibrant institutions within which to fully express itself. That will now be possible, thanks to the generosity of the Prosserman Family, Honey and Barry Sherman, the Gales Family, Al and Malka Green, and others. Thanks must also be extended to the Sherman Campus construction committee, along with developers Peter Cohen and Peter Menkes, for their incredible vision and the time and energy they devoted to this project. Built to provide a venue in which to engage meaningfully in Jewish and community life, the Prosserman JCC is intended to serve both surrounding neighbourhoods as well as communities throughout the Greater Toronto Area. When you visit the new JCC, you will no doubt be struck by the beautiful structure in which it is housed. But while the Prosserman JCC exists within a striking new building – the Donald Gales Family Pavilion – it will be so much more than a building. The Prosserman JCC is only as good as the community that animates it. Our brand new daycare and preschool will come to life each day with the sounds of your children playing, laughing and singing Hebrew songs. Our culinary arts studio will be filled with delicious smells when you take part in a new and interesting cooking course. And our fitness centre will be abuzz when you and your friends drop by to try out one of our many classes or pump some iron using one of our many new machines. And there’s more: the Prosserman JCC is coming to your community, providing activities where you live, such as sports leagues, community engagement projects, interesting lectures and so much more. As we open a new chapter within the life of the Jewish community in Toronto, we’re extending our hand to you. It’s only with your enthusiastic participation that the Prosserman JCC will become an epicentre for Jewish and communal life in our city. I invite you to join us as we embark on this remarkable journey together. Yours,
Bryan Keshen Executive Director, Prosserman JCC

TRUE TO HIS WORD: MARTIN PROSSERMAN’S STORY As a child growing up in Montreal, Martin Prosserman was thankful for the Montreal YMHA. It was there that he was able to receive a clean towel, a bar of soap and a hot shower — all for a nickel. Prosserman, who went on to found the menswear company Moores the Suit People, used to say that, if he ever made it, he was going to give back. The Prosserman JCC is his way of giving back and, in his words, paying off the “debt” he incurred as a child in Montreal. It is also the Prosserman family’s way of honouring Ellen Prosserman, the family’s matriarch, who passed away in 2002. Martin and Ellen Prosserman met at a Y dance in Montreal. The Prossermans went on to have three boys – Gary, Ron and Brian. Ellen Prosserman has been recognized as a woman who treated everyone with dignity, compassion, honesty and respect. In the words of Ron Prosserman, “the elderly, the poor and the vulnerable of our community will all be treated with the same kindness and care in this exciting new centre.” Each of Martin and Ellen’s (z”l) sons are proud to support this vibrant and dynamic new institution, which is a source of pride for the entire family. As Ron has said, the Prosserman JCC will be a place “where new friendships are formed and old friendships are enhanced… this will be a place where our children can become fully immersed in Jewish culture and Jewish life. I can’t think of anything that would have made my mother happier.”

PROGRAMS FALL 2009
INTERGENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN THE OLDER FAMILY — NEW FRONTIERS This course will examine the changing demographics of families today and the implication this has for the interaction among the generations as families age: increased longevity of the oldest generation, fewer adult children from the low birthrate of the baby boomer generation, more adult children remaining or returning to parents’ home, remarriage/repartnering of older parents as well as the adult children, and the multigenerational extended families that all these factors create. Against this changing demographic, this course will explore changing independence and dependence needs of these generations, as well as effective interpersonal communication styles in planning and supporting these needs. Instructor: Rheta Rosen Room: 125 Date: Fridays, Oct 9 – 30 Time: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Price: $50 members and Ryerson/Chang members / $60 non-members Age: 55+
AMERICAN MOVIES AND THE POLITICS OF IDEALISM Using film and discussion, this course probes, from the dashed optimism of the Kennedy era through to its renewal in the early years of the Obama period, how key American movies from the last forty years have soaked up the political and cultural ideals of the time they were made. For example, The Manchurian Candidate (1962) foreshadowed the tragedy of Dallas a year later, In the Heat of the Night (1966) reflected the racially troubled Johnson era. American movies came to echo the secret aspirations and dashed expectations of the country’s deeply divisive elements. Many of the movies we’ll examine also shape – and reflect – much of American public thinking and discourse.

BEYOND THE CONFLICT: CONTEMPORARY ISRAELI CINEMA
COMMUNITY BUILDING
Israeli cinema has experienced a significant coming-ofage in terms of its historical and social evolution and its increasing visibility and popularity on the international circuit. This course explores the new Israeli cinema that has emerged over the last two decades, examining films that look beyond the conflict, that turn away from the traditional topics of politics, religion and war, to focus on more personal subjects. While these films do specifically address Israeli culture and refer to Jewish history and sensibilities, they nonetheless present a more universal, globalized perspective in their treatment of the social issues and psychological problems that affect all modern societies.

SPROUT RIGHT COOKING CLASSES
BACK TO BASICS OF FAMILY MEALS
MOMMY CHEF
Learn how to make nutritious, home cooked meals the whole family will love. This three-class series covers:
The following classes are taught by Lianne Phillipson-Webb and Beth Beaulieu of Sprout Right. Sprout Right’s philosophy is grounded in a passion for good food and good health for mom and baby. Sprout Right helps women with pre-conception, pregnancy, and post-natal care right through to the introduction of solid food.
• how to plan out your week to optimize your cooking and shopping time as well as save on cooking each night. • the “have-on-hand foods” you need for a wellstocked, healthy pantry. • new recipes to pull off a meal in under 30 minutes without compromising on ingredients, nutrients and, of course, taste. • how to make weekly healthy meal plans including recipes for freezer meals as well as healthy lunches and snacks for the whole family.
This six-week course is available for a variety of age groups. Parents learn and prepare big batches of different vitamin-rich, organic meals to serve to their babies and toddlers. Topics covered also include when to start feeding solids; what kinds of foods to introduce when; which foods are the most nutritious; which foods are safe. From pureed plums, blueberries or broccoli for the six-month-old taking his first bite, to immune-boosting parsnip mixed with apples, rutabaga and garlic for the expanding pallet of a nine-month-old, to a meal of bean burgers and sweet potato fries for toddlers, Mommy Chef explores all the health benefits and offers taste sensations and ingredients you just can’t get from a jar.
THREE-WEEK EVENING SERIES Date: Three week series beginning Tuesday, Sept 15 or Tuesday, Nov, 10 Time: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm Price: $150

Co-presented with Koffler Centre of the Arts
JEWISH ISSUES FOR INTERFAITH COUPLES Are you looking to explore the Jewish issues that might arise with interfaith couples? Our small group exercises, discussion, and resources are offered in a nonjudgmental, confidential, safe environment. RELIGIOUS ZIONISM: A VOLATILE BLEND OF MYSTICISM, MESSIANISM AND NATIONALISM The pioneers who founded the State of Israel were primarily secular. Yet early on, religious thinkers – foremost among them Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook – began to incorporate spiritual Jewish teachings into the Zionist movement. After the Six Day War in 1967, this blend of nationalism, mysticism and messianism became the dominant ideology of Israel’s religious right. This course will explore the development of mystical Zionism and will pose the following questions: is this the only form of religious Zionism today? Can we find a Zionist ideology that is both religious and liberal? What values would such an ideology espouse? Instructor: Rabbi Lawrence A. Englander Date: Tuesdays, Oct 20 – Nov 24 Time: 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm Price: $130 / $80 Students & Seniors Age: Adults
BEYOND THE CONFLICT: CONTEMPORARY ISRAELI CINEMA Israeli cinema has experienced a significant comingof-age in terms of its historical and social evolution and its increasing visibility and popularity on the international circuit. Instructor: Gillian Helfield Room: Brettler/Mintz Foundation Program Room (room 123) Date: Tuesdays, Oct 20 – Dec 1 Time: 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm Price: $130 / $80 Students & Seniors Age: Adults

The first five years of a child’s life are often thought to be the most critical. That makes choosing the right childcare one of the more important decisions a parent has to make. Built with children in mind, the new Prosserman daycare and preschool was created to allow children maximum self-expression, helping them reach their full potential while connecting to Jewish traditions in a positive and meaningful way. Our new facility, the David & Esther Freiman Childhood Education Centre, is more than a bright, open space in which children learn, play and interact with each other. Designed and built with a Reggio Emilia sensibility – an early childhood education philosophy that emphasizes exploration and discovery in a supportive environment – the new daycare and preschool enhances each child’s individual learning experience. But what makes the Prosserman daycare and preschool so special is that we are housed within a JCC, making the children one generation among the many who come to the Prosserman JCC. As members of this community, the children have access to all of the JCC’s facilities, providing plenty of stimulation for budding young minds. Prosserman daycare and preschool strives to be an inclusive environment, and a focus on inclusiveness informs both programming content as well as the design of the facility. A new fully accessible outdoor playground also provides children with an outlet for their boundless energy. Perhaps most importantly, Prosserman daycare and preschool recognizes that the early years are a vital time for the entire family. This is what truly sets Prosserman daycare and preschool apart – we don’t just serve children, we serve families. We recognize that a child’s whole family needs support during this time. When parents enroll their children in the Prosserman daycare and preschool, they become part of a warm, supportive and welcoming community that continues well beyond the child’s time at the centre.
