Proof the Book of Enoch is Scripture The Book of Enoch was treasured by the ancient Nazarenes as an inspired book of prophecy authored by Enoch himself. Jesus’ own half-brother Jude quotes from the Book of Enoch saying: Jude 1:14-15 (NIV Bible) 14

Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones 15to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him."

Some commentators have tried to minimize the importance of this quotation, claiming that Jude was only quoting the Book of Enoch in the way that Paul quoted Greek philosophers. In fact there are two very important features in Jude’s citation. First of all, while the Book of Enoch is quoted (specifically 1Enoch 1:9), Jude attributes his quote not to the Book of Enoch, but to the man Enoch (Enoch, seventh from Adam). Since we have copies of the Book of Enoch which predate the Book of Jude, this quote tells us that Enoch seventh from Adam wrote the Book of Enoch. Secondly, Jude uses the word “prophecy.” Jude tells us that this quote from Enoch, which comes from the Book of Enoch, is prophecy. That is a very important statement. Regarding prophecy, Peter writes: 2 Peter 1:20-21 (NIV Bible) 20

Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

So if, as Jude tells us, the Book of Enoch is “prophecy,” then Peter tells us that it was inspired by the Holy Spirit. Timothy has some important words for us about scripture that is inspired: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV Bible) 16

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

So, if the Book of Enoch is prophecy, then it was inspired by the Holy Spirit. And if Enoch was inspired by the Spirit, then it is profitable for teaching and for rebuking and for correction and for training in righteousness. In other words, If Jude is telling the truth then we should be using the Book of Enoch as Scripture and not taking it lightly! As a matter of fact, the ancient Nazarenes treasured the Book of Enoch and used it alongside the book we know today as canon. This is evidenced by the fact that Jude quotes Enoch. R.H. Charles listed 128 locations where the Ketuvin Netzarim (The writings of the Nazarenes, commonly known today as the “New Testament”) is clearly influenced by statements in the Book of Enoch. The Book of Enoch was used within Judaism at least as early as the second century B.C.E. Seven fragmentary Aramaic copies were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Jewish Zohar writings also cites the Book of Enoch by name (Zohar 1:37b) and makes much use of its account of the fallen angels Shemikhaza and Azazel. The earliest Gentile Christians also accepted and made use of the Book of Enoch. Many of the so-called “Church Fathers” either quoted Enoch, or made use of it. Among these were the author of the Epistle of Barnabas, Justin Martyr (2nd C.), Irenaeus (2nd C.), Clement of Alexandria (2nd C.) and Origen (3rd C.). Tertullian (160230 C.E.) even called the book “Holy Scripture.” The book was even canonized by the Ethiopian Church.

Enoch 1:8-9 (AESV Bible) 8 But he will give peace to the righteous ones. And he will protect the Elect, and mercy shall be given to them. For all of them belong to God, and they will be given a great reward, and they will all be blessed. God will help them, and light shall appear unto them, and he will give them peace. 9 Behold! He comes with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to execute judgment upon all, and to destroy all of the evil ones; and he will convict all flesh of all the works of their wickedness which they have committed, and of all the evil which the ungrateful have spoken against him."

Hebrews 11:5 (NIV Bible) 5

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.

There you have it! The Book of Enoch is a God-breathed prophecy inspired by the Holy Spirit! ... And the man who wrote it pleased God!

Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
