Pronuncing Portugese: 1. Hello: Olá (With an open A, ah... The O is pronounced like in Spanish, also
open.) 2. Goodbye: Adeus (Again, open A. The E is pronounced like in French. This
word is great because it can be formal or not, and it's easy to say.) or Tchau (Said like CIAO in Italian. This word isn't formal at all, but rather friendly. Don't use it with people you don't know.) 3. Good afternoon: Boa tarde (Boh-ah Tahr-d.). Used after noon or after the noon
meal, until twilight. 4. Good morning: Bom dia (Boh-mm dih-ah. This actually means GOOD DAY, but
it´s used mostly used like GOOD MORNING, so avoid using it for all the day.). Used before noon or before the noon meal. 5. How are you?: Como está? (Coh-mooh esh-tah? This is formal.). 6. I don't speak Portuguese: Não falo português (Nah-oom fah-looh pooh-r-tooh-
guês. The E is said with french accent, like the one in ADEUS.) 7. Do you speak English?: (This one you can say in English, but here it is
anyway) Fala inglês? (Formal form. Fah-lah inn-glesh. It's not how we really say it in Portugal, but people will usually understand you.) 8. Man: Homem (O-men with an open O. Said like this people may not
understand you, but the real thing can't be written-- at least, I can't write it.) or Senhor (Seh-nior. This is Spanish accent, but they'll understand it. If you are talking to someone SENHOR can be used like YOU, in a formal way.)
9. Woman: Mulher (Mooh-lehr. Not like Portuguese at all, but you should be
understood.) or Senhora (Seh-niorah. The exact thing as with SENHOR, here.)
10. Dog: Cão (Cah-oohm.) 11. Cat: Gato (Gah-tooh.) 12. Spider: Aranha (Ah-rah-niah. Again, Portuguese people don't say "niah", but
they should understand.)
13. What time is it?: Que horas são? (Queh o-rah-sh sah-oomm. The E in QUE is
closed, and the O in HORAS is open like in spanish.)
14. Thank you: Obrigado (Oh-bree-gah-dooh.), if you are a man; Obrigada (Oh-
bree-gah-dah.), if you are a woman.
15. Please: Por favor (Pooh-r fah-voh-r.) 16. You're welcome: De nada (The nah-dah. This can be used with just about
anyone.) or Não tem de quê (This one is very formal. Nah-oomm tah-eehm the queh.) 17. Computer: Computador (Com-pooh-tah-door. This isn't really how it's said, but
you should be understood.)
18. Friend: Amigo (Ah-meeh-gooh. This means a male friend.) or Amiga (Ah-
meeh-gah. This means a female friend.)
19. Girlfriend: Namorada (Nah-mooh-rah-dah. With an open A in RA.) 20. Boyfriend: Namorado (Nah-mooh-rah-dooh. With the A, same as in
NAMORADA.) 21. Why?: Porquê? (Poohr-queh. Open E. This isn't how we pronounce it, but it's
close enough.) 22. Because: Porque (Poohr-queh. The defference between this and PORQUÊ is
the pronunciation of the E. With PORQUE it's more closed.) 23. Head: Cabeça (Cah-beh-sah.) 24. Hand: Mão (Mah-oohmm.) 25. Finger: Dedo (Deh-dooh.) 26. Toe: Dedo (We use the same word.) or Dedo do pé (Deh-dooh dooh peh. It
means literally FOOT FINGER.)
