Definition:-A group of words that makes sense is called a sentence. eg• • • • •
I am playing hockey. What are you doing? What a fine hit ! O for a life full of joys! Let us go out for a walk.
Forms of sentence:-Sentence can be classified into five important types .
1 ASSERTIVE
2 INTERROGATIVE
5 OPTATIVE
3 IMPERATIVE
4 EXCLAMATORY
Assertive Sentences: • An assertive sentence is one which states something. It may be affirmative (positive) or
E.G. • We love our parents. (Affirmative) • Mohan does not smoke. (Negative) negative.
Interrogative Sentences:
An interrogative sentences is one which asks a question. E.g.
Where is my pen ? Does he play football ?
Imperative Sentence • An imperative sentence is one which expresses a command ,a request ,an advice or an entreaty. E.G. • Shut the door. (Command) • Please help me. (Request ) • Help the needy (Advice ) • Do pay us a visit. (Entreaty)
Exclamatory Sentences • An exclamatory sentences is one which expresses some sudden or deep feeling. • E.G. • What a fine weather ! • How beautiful the girl is !
Optative Sentence: • An optative sentence is one which expresses a wish. E.g. • May he live long ! • May you succeed in life !
Points To Remember • Every sentence begins with a capital letter. • A full stop (.)is placed at the end of every Imperative or Assertive sentence. • A mark of Exclamation (!) is placed at the end of every optative or Exclamatory sentence . • A question mark (?) is placed at the end of every Interrogative sentence.
