profile pt pannalal ghosh as the foremost exponent of balsuri (the bomboo flute) is credited with the introduction of balsuri as a classical instrument. until then it was just a folk instrument. born into a musical family in 1911 in what is now bangladesh, took his initial training from his father and uncles. his final rigorous training came much later under the guidance of baba allaudin khan. pt ghosh worked extensively for many indian films, initially under the well known music director anil biswas. later he worked as the composer of the national orchestra for the air. in a short time he earned fame and recognition for his music and the instrument he had invented, the 34 inch long balsuri. he even accompanied many great vocalists of the time like ustad faiyaz khan and pt omkarnath thakur. pt ghosh died suddenly in 1960 at the age of 59, still in his musical prime.
