• It is the science and technology of robots, their design, manufacturing, and application. • Robotics require a working knowledge of electronics, mechanics and software. • Person working in the field is a Roboticist.

• The word “robot” was coined by science fiction author and Nobel Prize winner “Karel Capek” in the year 1920. • Word robotics was first used in the year May 1941 by “Isaac Asimov” in a science fiction story “Liar”. • It came from Czech & Slovak word “robota” meaning “self labor” or “hard work”.

• ISO 8373 states that “an automatically controlled reprogram-able,multipurpose,manipulator programmable in three or more axes, which may be either fixed in placed or mobile for use in industrial automation applications.” • The above definition is used when comparing the number of robots in each country.

• ACTUATION • MANIPULATION

• Actuators are the muscles of a robot which convert stored energy into movement. • Most common actuators are electric motors. • Motors , stepper motors, air muscles and electroactive polymers are common examples of actuation.

• In real world robots require someway to manipulate which is possible with hands and arms. • Hands of a robot is referred to as “end effectors” while arm as “manipulator”. • Grippers and vaccume grippers are some common examples of end effectors.

To imitate the action of a human being, it has to be able to perform three fundamental task:

3. It must be conscious of the world around it. 4. The robot must somehow “know” what to do? It must be able to analyze and interpret data it has received. 5. The robot must be able to act on the instruction or data it has received.

• It does not have its own brain like humans do. • It will only follow the instructions programmed via software. • It has the learning capability but not like a human brain.

• Facial expression can provide rapid feedback on the progress of a dialog between two humans. • A robot should know how to approach a human by their facial expression and body language. • Expressions can vary in the form of happiness, curiosity, frightening, surprised or crazy looking.

• 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Robots are used in the following Areas Industries Medicine Military Space Missions Home

• ASIMO (HONDA) • QRIO (SONY) • EMIEW (HITACHI)

• . • ASIMO Stands for “Advance Step In Innovative Mobility” • The first humanoid was manufactured by Honda • Honda’s ASIMO was “born” five years ago. • It is physically anthropomorphic. • ASIMO is almost always characterized as a service robot.

• Sensors:Foot • Power • Operating time

6-axis foot area sensors Rechargeable 51.8V lithium ion battery 1 hour

• The fastest robot on two legs but its record is broken by ASIMO • It is also a humanoid robot. • Sony’s Qrio has been singing, jogging and dancing capabilities.

• CPU 64 bit RISC processor(x2) • Main recording device 64MB DRAM (x2) • Operating system Sony’s original real time (OS) • Internal sensors Distance detection, acceleration,angular rate,foot sole sensors. • Touch sensors Head, handle, hands, shoulders

• The 1.3m(4.2ft) Emiew was the world’s quickest-moving robot yet at 6km/h (3.7mph). • Emiew uses wheels instead of feet. • Sensors are placed on head, waist, and near wheels. • Excellent mobility and interactive existence as work mate.

• According to Hitachi’s Mechanical Engineering Research laboratory “We aimed to create a robot that could could live and co-exist with peoples.”
