CMMI AND ITS HISTORY.
Ø Predecessor being CMM at CarnegieMellon Software Engineering Institute
Ø Originally intended as a tool to evaluate the ability of government contractors to perform a contracted software project. Ø An Appraisal technique to measure maturity of an organization. 12/11/08

3
IMMATURE VS MATURE Immature Ø Process improvised during project Ø Reactive but not proactive. Ø Quality sacrificed for schedule. Ø No objective measure of quality.
12/11/08
Mature Ø Inter-group communication and coordination. Ø Practices consistent with processes. Ø Processes updated as necessary Ø Management formally commits

DEVELOPMENT RATIONALE Ø Extension Of CMM: CMM Integration project was formed to sort out the problem of using multiple CMMs. These three Source Models are : • Capability Maturity Model for Software (SWCMM) - v2.0 Draft C • Electronic Industries Alliance Interim Standard (EIA/IS) - 731 Systems Engineering • Integrated Product Development Capability Maturity Model (IPD-CMM) v0.98 12/11/08

CMMI COMPONENTS
Ø The Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI) is a suite of products used for improving processes: § Models § Appraisal Methods § Training Courses

Chaitanya Jadhav, MMS-3, IT,
6
CMMI COMPONENTS-Models Ø A framework that describes key elements of effective processes. Ø A guide to evolutionary improvement from ad hoc, immature activities to mature, disciplined processes Ø A description of practices for planning, engineering, and managing business processes that can help you achieve business goals related to things such as: § cost § schedule § functionality § product/service quality

CMMI COMPONENTS-Models Ø Acquisition is the process of obtaining products (goods and services) through contract. Ø Development includes the development and maintenance practices useful for Systems Engineering, Hardware Engineering, and Software Engineering. Ø A service is a product that is intangible and non storable 12/11/08

CMMI COMPONENTS-Appraisals

10
CMMI COMPONENTS-Appraisals SCAMPI Class A Appraisal: Ø Conducted when an organization has implemented a number of significant process improvements and needs to formally benchmark its process relative to the CMMI. Ø It is the only appraisal method that provides CMMI Maturity Level or Capability Level ratings. 12/11/08
Chaitanya Jadhav, MMS-3, IT,
11
CMMI COMPONENTS-Appraisals SCAMPI Class B Appraisal: Ø Conducted to assess progress towards a target CMMI Maturity Level, but at a lower cost than a SCAMPI A. Ø Provide detailed findings and indicate the likelihood that the evaluated practices would be rated as satisfactorily implemented in a SCAMPI A appraisal.

Chaitanya Jadhav, MMS-3, IT,
12
CMMI COMPONENTS-Appraisals SCAMPI Class C Appraisal: Ø Conducted to have a quick gap analysis to determine an organization's readiness for a SCAMPI A. Ø Assess the adequacy of a new process before it is implemented. Ø Monitor the implementation of a process. 12/11/08
