Present simple and the Present Continuous
The simple present expresses daily habits or usual activities, as in examples 1 and 2: 1. Robert leaves for school every morning at 8:00. 2. I usually call my girlfriend in the evening. The simple present expresses general statements of fact, as in examples 3 to 6. In general, the simple present is used for events or situations that exist always, usually, or habitually in the past, present, and future. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Dogs bark . The earth travels around the sun. A triangle has three sides. The ocean is blue.
The present continuous expresses an activity that is in continuing progress ( is occurring, is happening) right now, at this moment. The event is in progress at the time the speaker is saying the sentence. The event began in the past, is in progress now, and will probably continue into the future. See examples 79. FORM: am, is are + ing. 7. Barbara can’t come to the door right now because she is taking a shower. 8. It’s Friday afternoon. I am walking in the park with my boyfriend right now. 9. Richard and Monica are students at the University. They are studying for an exam in the library right now. ·
