PRESENT SIMPLE
We use the present simple for permanent situations and routines, including likes and dislikes;
Add an “-s” to the 3rd person singular. All other forms are like the infinitive;
Use do/does for interrogative and negative sentences + main verb in the infinitive;
e.g. She loves to be with her
Positive Sentences/Negative Sentences POSITIVE e.g. Marcos draws every single day; e.g. Inês enjoys to swim;
NEGATIVE e.g. João Berga doesn’t like to play football; e.g. Zé Diogo and Filipa don’t like to speak French;
Interrogative sentences e.g. Do João Berga and Zé Diogo drink in the morning?; e.g. Does Teddy go to the cinema at the weekends?; e.g. Do they play in a team?
Short answers POSITIVE
NEGATIVE
e.g. Yes, he does.
e.g. No, he doesn’t.
e.g. Yes, they do.
e.g. No, they don’t.
PRESENT CONTINUOUS
We use the present continuous for activities that are happening at or around the time of speaking; To be + gerund (-ing);
EXCEPTION If the base verb ends in vowel + consonant + “-e”, omit the “-e”. E.g. Live/Living If the base verb ends in consonant + stressed vowel + consonant, double the last letter. E.g. Stop/Stopping *Note that this exception does not apply when the last syllable of the base verb is not stressed. E.g. open/opening
e.g. Afonso is presenting his work.
Positive Sentences/Negative Sentences POSITIVE e.g. Joana is sleeping; e.g. Inês and Camila are working;
NEGATIVE e.g. Nuno isn’t wearing a dress; e.g. Rafael and Nuno aren’t playing basketball.
Interrogative sentences e.g. Are João and Tiago wearing make-up?; e.g. Is Diogo playing tennis?; e.g. Is Afonso listening to Michael Jackson right now?
