5. Calculate the amount of white petrolatum in grams required for this Rx? 48g total - 5.76g (menthol, camphor, and thymol, 1.92g each) - 1.2g mineral oil (SG 0.8 sol 1ml = 0.8g) - 3g sulfur USP = 38.04g of white petrolatum (depending on how much mineral oil used, 38g is for 30gtts, or 1.5ml.)

Answer:

38.04g

6. Write the method for compounding this prescription. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Weigh 38.04g of white petrolatum. Label and set aside. Weigh 3g of sulfur USP. Label and set aside. Weigh 1.92g each of menthol, thymol, and camphor using a plastic spatula. Label and set aside. Combine the menthol, camphor, and thymol on an ointment tile to form a uniform eutectic mixture. Incorporate the eutectic mixture into a small amount of white petrolatum. Levigate the sulfur USP powder with enough mineral oil (40gtts or 2ml) to form a uniform product using a metal spatula. Incorporate this product into a small amount of white petrolatum. 7. Incorporate the eutectic/white pet product into the rest of the white pet using geometric dilution. 8. Incorporate the sulfur USP/petrolatum mixture via geometric dilution into the eutectic/white petrolatum product until a uniform product is formed. 9. Pack the ointment into a clean 2 oz. ointment jar ensuring pharmaceutical elegance. 10. Label, affix an “External Use Only” label and any other appropriate auxiliary labels to the jar, and dispense.

Tip: It is preferred to incorporate or levigate your “drugs” into the purest form of base first. In this case, both dr were incorporated into the base first, then the rest of the base incorporated with one or the other, and Lastly, the drugs were incorporated together. The last step should be to incorporate your piles of drug pastes toget after each one has been combined with remaining base. The least preferred method was to combine the eutectic with the sulfur before combining either into any base.
