Assignment 1 – Power Supplies You are to produce an easy guide to power supplies. It should be presented on one piece of A3 paper and should include the following: 1. Describe, with the aid of pictures, the different sizes of batteries. 2. Explain the following terms: Capacity, Amp hours.

3. Compare Zinc Chloride, Nickel cadmium and Lithium batteries in terms of their properties, capacity and uses. 4. Draw two AA batteries in series and two AA batteries in parallel and state the voltage output from each. 5. What is A.C.? How does it differ from D.C.? 6. In Hong Kong the peak value of mains electricity is 354 volts. What is

the r.m.s. of this value? Draw a simple graph that represents this. 7. The frequency of A.C. in Hong Kong is 50 Hertz. What does this mean? Show your answer on your graph. 8. Briefly explain how Photovoltaic or Solar Cells work and give 3 examples of products that use photovoltaic cells to produce electricity. 9. Research and explain the environmental concerns with the use of batteries, especially mercury and cadmium and explain how batteries should be safely disposed of at the end of their working life. You should present all of your work as neatly laid out and fit it onto a single piece of A3 paper. Additionally on an A4 paper complete a bibliography citing the sources of all you information and images.
