PRESENTATION PROVINCE OF PORTUGAL • Fr. Sueiro Gomes, one of the 16 first companions of Saint Dominic, was Portuguese; • In 1216 he was sent to Spain and Portugal as first Prior Provincial to open the first convents; • In 1217 he opened the first Dominican house in Portugal, and in 1221 the first convent; • The Province of Portugal was established in 1417.
PROVINCE OF PORTUGAL • 1663: first Lay Third Order started in Porto. • 1834: all the convents were closed, when the civil war ended. • Irish Dominicans (nuns and friars) remained in Lisbon. • The Lay Third Order still continued in 10 diferent cities. • 1898: first Portuguese friar after 1832.
PROVINCE OF PORTUGAL • 1910: all religious orders were, again, expelled by the new republican regime. • 1916: existence of 5 friars. • 1922: first Dominican bishop since the 19th century. • 1962: the Province of Portugal was restored, with 3 convents. • During the 50’s and 60’s, the Third Order had more than 4,000 members, in 45 fraternities.
PROVINCE OF PORTUGAL • Today: – 16 fraternities; – 500 members; – 250 active members in the Fraternities; – 1 newspaper; – 1 website, – 1 church owned, run and administrated by a fraternity;
