Portfolio Requirments

Portfolio: What is it? Purposeful

Collection of Work Shows effort, progress, and achievement over the semester Includes your selections Reflection on your work 

What should you include? One

essay that incorporates words and ideas of others with proper attribution One essay written in class and submitted without revision Reflection that addresses your selections and your growth in writing over the semester

Each Essay Should Include Outlines Drafts Feedback

Portfolio Checklist Demonstrates

adequate sentence structure, grammar, spelling and punctuation Properly analyzes outside readings to support and/or develop his or her own ideas Incorporates words and ideas of others through effective quotes, paraphrases and/or summaries 

Portfolio Checklist Utilizes

appropriate documentation and avoids plagiarism Writes self-reflective letter which demonstrates achievement of EN101 writing expectations and adequately assesses own writing progress Constructs portfolio to meet requirements

English 101 Writing Expectations  

Writing Process:



demonstrate the on-going writing process (pre-writing, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing)



generate an idea that allows an essay and each of its paragraphs to be unified



use thesis/idea, either clearly stated or implied, as the organizing principle for writing essays



develop logical and coherent organizational patterns and paragraph structures



use rhetorical strategies, based on audience and purpose, to develop essays



develop a unified essay using personal observations, critical thought, and outside readings



assess own writing progress and recognize areas for improvement



incorporate appropriate feedback from peers and instructors when revising essays and provide effective peer feedback



write essays that demonstrate an awareness of proper grammar and have few errors in mechanics



use computers to draft, write, edit, and research papers



write a minimum of four essays of three pages or more



select and prepare appropriate writing assignments to be included in final portfolios

summarize and analyze readings



articulate and support a position in response to readings
