Spreadsheet technology could be used in the science classroom to analyze data that was collected from a laboratory activity. Data collection is an aspect of core learning goal 1.3 which states, “The student will carry out scientific investigations effectively and employ the instruments, systems of measurement, and materials of science appropriately.” Data collection must also be used in order to achieve core learning goal 1.4 which states, “The student will demonstrate that data analysis is a vital aspect of the process of scientific inquiry and communication.” In the Biochemistry unit students participate in a lab where they sample different substances in order to test the pH of the substance. They are then asked to arrange the substances in a chart based on their respective pH values. Using spreadsheet technology students would be better able to analyze the data because they can formulate their graphs more efficiently. The collected data can be organized into a spreadsheet and then the students can create a bar graph comparing the various pH values. Using the computer to create a spreadsheet will better enable students to communicate their data. They will be able to electronically send their data and graphs. They can also easily incorporate this data into a class presentation such as a powerpoint presentation. When students analyze data by using a computer spreadsheet program instead of the traditional method of plotting on graph paper, they are engaging the utilizing stage of Thomas and Boysen’s taxonomy. The spreadsheet is used as a tool for graphing, which is a task that the students have already learned.
