Poetic Technique 2 - The Metaphor Unlike the simile, the metaphor Becomes the concentration of comparison. 'He is a lion in the streets, he was o tower Of ingratitude.' Be sure the reader's sense Of things is somewhat startled by this tool But also reign it in or be the fool. Thus 'She was a veritable pear. Or. Elvis Was his hair. Such things are not a plus, But border on ridiculous, Prepare The mood as misty chalice to accept The metaphoric wine and do not mix The meaning with outlandish reach. Thus "He is a lion and a vice which grips. 'He is a reaper and a sparrow thrush.' This bodes no good. But be yourself a work of man And take the thing in hand. Avoid, like death, the common phrase And always work upon the edge With consistency in self and poem both. Carl Estrin
