Poetic Technique 1 The Simile The simile is like a soon lost friend. He's here for now but maybe not again His meaning may be floated on a tense But caution must be used and reverence Displayed with adjectives which may displace The feeling burden in the rhyming race. Hence He was like a shabby lion in the zoo, As wretched as the cold he suffered through. Or, he was like roaring lion in the street, A threat to all of men he chanced to meet. Use it well but also sparingly Or readers will be bored quite thoroughly . Hence Vary your technique but keep the mood And then the very art work you have hewed Will emerge as chiseling you go Like a statue wrought by Michelangelo .
