5-2/6-2 Cover 2 Coverage Gaps -

The standard Cover-2 Defense has 3 “natural” gaps. This means that when played properly, the majority of the field is covered. But there are 3 small gaps that can be exploited. Gap 1 - Area starting 5-7 yards deep, ending 12-15 yards deep, and streaching from the sideline to about 15 yds in. Gap 2 - Area in the center if the field about 10 yards wide, starting about 8-10 yards deep and ending 12-15 yards deep Gap 3 - Area starting 5-7 yards deep, ending 12-15 yards deep, and streaching from the sideline to about 15 yds in. Gap 4 - This gap is a little different. This is a “physical” gap. This means that when played properly, the defenders themselves will create the gap in-route to their assignments or the assignment itself creates problems for the defender. This area is only 5-7 yards deep and 8-10 yards wide and requires a patient QB to wait for the right time...THROW WITH CAUTION!

4

5-3 Cover 3 Coverage Gaps The standard Cover-3 Defense has 2 “natural” gaps and 2 “physical” gaps. Gap 1 & 2 - These are also “Natural” gaps, but in this coverage these gaps are more dangerous because the CB in-route to his assignment will pass through these areas and therefore the QB must be able to throw to the reciever before the CB reaches that zone or after the CB has passed through. These zones start 6-8 yards deep, end 12-15 yards deep, but can streatch from side line to up to 20 yards in. Gap 3 & 4 - These gaps are “physical gaps but are much safer due to the fact that they are covered by an OLB and can be 10-12 yards away which can buy an extra 2-3 seconds for a fast reciever.

This formation can be run no-huddle or from the huddle but will primarily be run no-huddle. These are calls that you need to know for this formation. No-huddle play call The QB will call the play from the line-of-scrimmage using a 3 digit number (i.e., 417). The second number in the number called will be the play called (i.e., if the QB calls 417, the play call would be play number 1). At any time before the ball is snapped, the QB may call “check”. When the QB calls check the original play call is voided and a new one will be called. Change in reciever routes (hot routes) When a pass play is called, the QB may choose to change a recievers route. He will do this by calling a 2 digit number (i.e., 48). The first digit will be the route to switch to and the second will be the length of the route (i.e., 48 would be an 8 yard 4 route). Depending on the situation and/or the opponent, the numbers may reverse or change completely. Play 1: OL - Pass block making sure to protect inside gap FIRST WR & SL - From right to left, the pass routes will be as follows; 5-4-6-9 RB - At the snap, step forward and block any man that may become free QB - Focus on pre-snap read and ball security Play 2: OL - Pass block making sure to protect inside gap FIRST WR & SL - From right to left, the pass routes will be as follows; 9-9-2-5. This may be reversed at the LOS. 4 seconds into your route, begin a run block but do not initiate the block before. RB - At the snap, run a controled swing route to the PS (see next page...)

Page 32

QB - At the snap, look to you 9 routes and then turn and throw the swing route Play 3: OL - Man-to-man run block (zone block) at the snap making sure to drive your man across the field. WR & SL - Block the person responsible for covering you. If left open, find someone to block. RB - At the snap, pause for 1 second and then proceed to the QB side for either the hand-off or the fake. This is an option play, when the QB places the ball in the “pocket”, do NOT hold so tight that he can not remove the ball as this can cause a fumble or result in another negative play. QB - At the snap, read the defense to make the appropriate decision. You will have less than .5 seconds so this must be quick. After making the decision, either hand the ball off the the RB or fake the handoff and run to the side that thr RB came from. Play 4: OL - Man-to-man run block (zone block) at the snap making sure to drive your man across the field. WR & SL - Block the person responsible for covering you. If left open, find someone to block. RB - At the snap, pause for 1 second and then proceed to the QB side for the fake, you will then become a lead blocker around the PS tackle. QB - At the snap, you will fake the option hand-off and follow the RB’s lead block around the PS Tackle.
