PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) PHIVOLCS
Is a service institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology)
It is principally mandated to mitigate disasters that may arise from: Volcanic eruptions
Earthquakes
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology)
It is principally mandated to mitigate disasters that may arise from: Tsunami
And other related geotectonic phenomena
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) A little bit of history Commission on Volcanology was formed after the 1951 Hibok-hibok Volcano eruption.
Before the eruption, there was no government agency that seriously monitors the active volcanoes in the country.
The commission was created to “safeguard life and property against volcanic eruptions and its dangers.” It was later renamed as Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on 1982. Also, seismology was moved to PHIVOLCS from PAGASA
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) Why do we need PHIVOLCS?
Volcanoes

Earthquakes
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) Why do we need PHIVOLCS? The Philippines has more seismologic and volcanic activities compared to other countries because it is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) Why do we need PHIVOLCS? The Philippines sits on different continental plates.
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) Why do we need PHIVOLCS? The Philippines has so many active faults within its territory.
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) Why do we need PHIVOLCS?
The primary role of PHIVOLCS is to inform all people of the Philippines about volcanic activities, earthquakes and other geotectonic phenomena.
PHIVOLCS has numerous programs to raise awareness on both eruption of volcanoes and earthquakes.
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) Why do we need PHIVOLCS?
Examples of the programs made by PHIVOLCS: Valley Fault System Atlas - It is a detailed and updated map of the two major faults in Metro Manila, West and East Valley Fault.
It is made in preparation for a possible 7.2 magnitude earthquake that may happen this century.
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) Why do we need PHIVOLCS?
Examples of the programs made by PHIVOLCS: Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction PHIVOLCS devised a method on classifying volcanoes to predict their future eruptions An example would be Mayon Volcano. PHIVOLCS uses their data of its past eruptions to predict the future activity of Mayon Volcano. Especially because Mayon is relatively active during these past few years.
