Delight in light While technological advancement is vital for the continuing success of LEDs, it is the relevance of this technology for our customers that dominates our thinking. That is why all of our innovations are driven by insights into the needs of end-users. We have identified four different areas where LEDs can make a significant contribution to meeting these needs:

Renovation At their simplest level, LEDs are used to replace conventional lighting. The output can be focused very precisely to highlight particular features of buildings, which also minimizes light spillage on to nearby streets and roads.

Designers’ Delight LEDs provide a palette of millions of colours and dynamic effects which conventional lighting simply can’t match. These can be used to enhance the appearance of architecture at night, or change colour tones to reflect special occasions.

Embedded Lighting With their low heat output, LED lights can be integrated almost anywhere: in walls, ceilings, furniture and fabrics. They even help create an unforgettable experience at a famous Finnish snow castle – without melting the ice sculptures they are embedded in!

Added Intelligence Because LEDs are digital, different tones and moods can be pre-programmed, or changed at the press of a button. Retailers can broadcast new offers across the façade of an outlet, interior lighting can be changed to reflect the weather outside – the possibilities are endless. There’s never been a better time to work with LED-based lighting solutions. Let the examples on the following pages serve as an inspiration...

Welcome to a new era in lighting LED technology has advanced at a remarkable pace in recent years. No longer confined to electronic devices such as mobile phones or watches, LED-based solutions are becoming ever more widespread. They improve the quality of people’s lives in retail outlets, hotels, restaurants, offices, domestic environments and in many different features of the urban landscape including public buildings, bridges, footpaths, market squares and façades. It’s hardly surprising LEDs are proving so popular. Compared with traditional non-solid-state lighting, they are energy-efficient, produce fewer CO2 emissions and radiate little heat, cost less to run and maintain, are small and flexible, last longer and produce a light that is precisely controllable and programmable. Although the colour properties of LEDs have been frequently applied by designers for atmosphere creation, entertainment and architectural highlighting, there is another area where LEDs are becoming increasingly popular; white light. For more than a decade, LEDs have been offering a viable alternative to conventional light sources, and with ongoing improvements in brightness, this is a trend definitely set to continue and broaden in scope.

What are LEDs? LED stands for light-emitting diode. A diode is a device made from two different conducting materials that allows current to flow in only one direction. When electricity is passed through the diode, the atoms in one material are excited to a higher energy level. This energy is released as the atoms transfer electrons to the other material. During this energy release light is created. The colour of the light from the LED depends on what the diode is made from and how it is configured.

Philips Core Technologies Philips combines LED sources with proprietary technologies to deliver completely integrated solutions that adapt to existing lighting environments. We enable applications that range from extraordinary feats of digital control to common, functional uses of light – all made simple and seamless to the end user. One needn’t be an engineer or programmer to use solid-state lighting today. Our lighting systems boast unique features made possible by a growing number of core technologies – all intended to reduce the cost and complexity of solid-state lighting control, operation and installation.

Chromacore® technology is fundamental to all of Philips’ intelligent LED lighting systems. It broke ground in 1997 as an unprecedented means for adding intelligence, such as a microprocessor coupled with network addressability and/or user interface, to LED illumination devices. It makes colour-changing effects and variable colour temperature possible, among other feats. Chromasic® is a custom-designed microchip that integrates digital LED control and communication technology in a single silicon chip. The device can be used in numerous system configurations and creates whole new possibilities for both small and large-scale installations, even those that comprise many thousands of individual light nodes – each now equipped with the intelligence to be automatically addressed and controlled.

Powercore® is a digital power processing technology that increases efficiency, lowers the overall cost and eases installation of solid-state lighting systems by integrating power and data management within the fixture itself. It uniquely controls power output to LED-based systems directly from line voltage, eliminating the need for an external power supply and thereby simplifying installation. DIMand™ technology allows LED lighting devices to interpret standard dimming signals, essentially allowing the dimmer to become a control interface to the device. It makes certain of Philips’ fixtures and lamps compatible with standard dimmers for ease of use. Optibin® is an advanced proprietary production binning optimization process that assures consistent light output from one fixture or lamp to the next. It minimizes the effects of the inherent variance and inconsistency of the “bins” delivered by LED manufacturers to achieve optimal colour consistency in Philips’ products.

Class II – Luminaires in this class are designed and constructed in such a way that exposed metal parts cannot become live. This can be achieved by means of either reinforced or double insulation, but without a provision for protective earthing.

Safety and protection of luminaires Approvals and standards Luminaires sold in the market are expected to comply with the appropriate safety requirements as laid down in the European series of standards EN 60598 prepared by CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation, and which are almost fully harmonised with the worldwide series of standards IEC 60598. European standards are accepted as the national standards and published as such. Since the issuing of the Low Voltage Directive the availability of the appropriate safety standards has improved the overall quality of our luminaires. The European testing institutes, in cooperation with the European Luminaire Industry, introduced the ENEC mark in January 1993. All luminaires supplied by Philips comply with the ENEC criteria and many indeed carry the ENEC mark to show the involvement of objective third parties. The CE mark, which is a condition for the free circulation on the entire European market of products that are safe, for example, is the way our organisation demonstrates its compliance with the relevant European legislation. For more information on the European platform of Testing agencies, please consult their website www.EEPCA.org Ambient temperature Philips luminaires are designed to meet the (environmental) conditions under which they are most likely to be used. The maximum ambient temperature Ta under which a luminaire can be operated safely, is indicated on the type label on the product; if no indication is given the product is intended for a maximum ambient temperature of 25°C. The ambient temperature always refers to the typical use of the luminaire: indoors or outdoors.

Upon request special solutions are often possible for higher or lower ambient temperatures. High-intensity discharge lamps function well below -20°C and are the most suitable lamps for outdoor use. Flammability From the point of view of flammability of mounting materials, luminaires can always be mounted on nonflammable building materials like concrete and stone. If luminaires are to be mounted on flammable materials special measures should be taken. Luminaires for discharge lamps with no warning sign to indicate that they are unsuitable for mounting on normally flammable surfaces, are suitable for mounting on building surfaces that do not ignite below 200°C. Electrical supply An important step has been taken to harmonise the European mains supply voltage. From 2003 onwards the voltage delivered for use in buildings is 230V/400V with a tolerance of ± 10%. Philips luminaires are designed for the future and will operate well on the supply of today and tomorrow. An example is the electronic ballast designed for a rated mains voltage of 220-240V, with tolerance for safety of +/- 10% and tolerances for performance of –8% and +6%, covering the full range between 202V and 254V. Electrical safety classes Electrical equipment is classified according to the protection level against electrical shock. In normal operation as well as during service and maintenance, luminaires should be protected against electrical shock. The safety of a luminaire depends on electrical, mechanical and thermal aspects, both under normal and fault conditions. The electrical safety classification drawn up by the IEC embraces 3 luminaire classes: Class I, II and III. Low voltage luminaires designed to meet the Safety Extra-Low Voltage (SELV) limits can be categorised as Class III.

The key (p294) gives a brief description of each electrical safety class. The official definitions are too long to be reproduced in full here, but can be summarised as printed below. If a protective earth connection is available, Class I luminaires are applied. However, if there is no earth connection or if eddy currents are present, Class II luminaires shall be applied. Class II water-protected luminaires are applied in wet and outdoor locations. Local electricity boards can provide the appropriate advice. Protection against mechanical shock The impact resistance of a luminaire defines the protection of the luminaire against mechanical shock. The European standard EN 50102 defines the degrees of protection against external mechanical impact (IK code) and the method of testing. The luminaire housing should withstand the defined energy of the mechanical shock without losing its electrical and mechanical safety, or the basic luminaire function. Translated into a more practical implementation, this means that after withstanding the shock, deformation of the mirror and housing is allowed, although broken lamps, an unsafe electrical situation and failure to meet the specified IP classifications are not permitted. The impact resistance is expressed as a group numeral, for instance IK06, which is related to the impact energy. All types of Philips luminaires have a minimum impact resistance of 0.2 J. The table (p294) shows the ten IK classifications and the defined shock energy expressed in joules. Notice that fully vandal-proof luminaires are not available; vandal-protected (IK09) and vandalresistant (IK10) are the best achievable classifications.

All Philips luminaires fulfil the minimum classification: IP20 (protected against finger contact with live parts), however a selection of luminaires, especially those for industrial and outdoor (road) applications, meet a higher IP classification. It is important to realise that the specification and safety of luminaires are only secured if the necessary maintenance is carried out according to the instructions of the manufacturer within the time schedules indicated. Ball impact resistance For indoor sports halls ball-impact-resistant luminaires are essential. As no European standards have been developed for this purpose, Philips has classified the relevant luminaires according to the German DIN 18032. After the impact test according to this standard (36 handballs targeted at a speed of 60Km/h) no damage of the luminaire should have occurred and no loose particles should drop down from the luminaire. Luminaires protected by a wire guard with a grid width exceeding 60mm are not to be used in tennis sports halls. Safety distance In the application of reflector lamps and luminaires with narrow beam distributions of a high intensity, a minimum distance between light source and illuminated surface has to be ensured. This is to prevent too high temperatures of the illuminated surface. Minimum values for safety distances are specified on the luminaire packing. The specified values must be considered as the shortest distances permitted between light source and illuminated object or surface to ensure long-lasting safe operation.

Protection against ingress of solid objects, dust and moisture The Ingress Protection system (IP) EN 60529, 1991 defines various degrees of protection against the ingress of foreign bodies, dust and moisture. The term ‘foreign bodies’ includes things like fingers and tools coming into contact with the electrical live parts of the product. Both safety aspects (contact with live parts) and harmful effects on the function of the luminaire are defined. The designation to indicate the degree of protection consists of the characteristic letters IP followed by 2 digits indicating conformity with the conditions

The majority of luminaires developed for office, shop and general indoor applications show no Ta, thus indicating 25°C. Luminaires designed for industrial highbay applications are designed for ambient temperatures as high as 40 to 45°C. The use of luminaires above their specified maximum ambient temperature may reduce safety margins and will mostly lead to a reduction of the lifetime of the various components. Electronic

equipment, ballasts and lighting controls are particularly sensitive to overheating. Although (extremely) low temperatures do not normally affect the safety of luminaires, this may affect operation during the startingup phase of the lamp. Fluorescent lamps should not be used below -5°C to -10°C.
