1 PhD position Bivalves as model organisms for molecular mechanisms of ageing Keywords: Comparative ageing research, marine bivalves, genomics To ensure “healthy ageing” and to prevent or delay age-related diseases, we need to understand the primary cause of the degenerative cellular changes in a more general sense. This can be achieved by considering evolutionary biological aspects and following a comparative interspecies approach. Aim of the PhD project is to investigate the underlying mechanisms of longevity using different populations of the marine bivalve Arctica islandica, which displays an exceptionally variable lifespan from 40 to 400 years. The project includes sampling trips in the Baltic Sea and around Iceland, aquaria and laboratory work including state of the art molecular tools like high throughput sequencing techniques, Q PCR and microarray technology. Successful applicants must have a strong interest and motivation to work in a competitive and interdisciplinary field and should have a background in molecular biology and interest in bioinformatics. The immediately available position will be situated within the Functional Genomics group of the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology in Kiel (www.ikmb.uni-kiel.de) at the Christian-AlbrechtsUniversity Kiel, which is associated to the 2 clusters of excellence (Inflammation@Interfaces, Future Ocean) and to the “Working group of Healthy ageing” (http://www.forschungsgruppegesundes-altern.de/en_startseite.phtml).
