Swallowing Food is carried to the stomach after mastication by an orderly sequence of Coordinated movements of the muscles of the mouth, pharynx & esophagus. 1. Oral stage 2. Pharyngeal stage 3. Oesophageal stage

oesophagus The oesophagus is a muscular tube 25 cm long in the adult. It extends from from the lower border of the cricoid cartilage above at the level of the sixth cervical vertebra, to the cardiac orifice of the stomach below, at the level of the eleventh thoracic vertebra.

 
