Introduction: I. Attention Step: I am going to inform you of all the good reasons there are to become and organ donor. I am a designated organ donor; once I have died I can help so many others continue to live and all I have done is signed a card. Some may be opposed to the idea but I hope that you will at least appreciate the severity of the need for organ donors and pass on this info II. Thematic Statement: If you could save up to 50 people’s lives by doing nothing but signing a card, wouldn’t you? By becoming an organ donor, once you have died, you could further the lives of dozens of other people that desperately need your help. Body: I. Need Step: According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, there are currently 96,237 people on the waiting list who need an organ transplant to live. Each day about 77 people receive organ transplants 19 people die each day due to organ shortages II. Main point #1: You will not receive poor medical care if you are a potential organ donor. Organs only collected after cardiac death or brain death (no O2 or blood flow). III. Main point #2: No longer using your body, why not help someone who is alive and in need of organs? Supporting Material: Organ donation has between an 80% and 85% success rate. All major religions in the U.S. support organ donation and see it as an act of generosity. IV, Main point #3: You will not be “butchered” when donating your organs Supporting Material: Organ and tissue recovery is carried out like any other surgical procedure and an open-casket burial is still possible after organ donation is carried out. Through the entire donation process the body is treated with care, respect and dignity V.

Let your family know of your wishes to be an organ donor Supporting Material: You can be a registered organ donor but if your family doesn’t know then they may not consent to the donation You can designate which tissues/organs to donate, on your card VI. You can help save or improve up to 50 lives with your donation Conclusion: I. Visualization Step: Pass around Organ Donor cards Use these to become a recognized organ donor Can specify what to donate on card The witness signatures need be those of family members so they know your wishes II. Restatement of Thematic Statement: Becoming an organ donor is an easy, selfless, and gratuitous act that could easily save dozens of lives, at no risk to you. III. Concluding Remarks: There are nearly 100,000 lives at stake in this country alone, dependent on you and me to supply them with the life-saving organs we will never use again. IV.
