Florida’s First Beach Spanish sailor Don Tristan de Luna arrived in Pensacola on August 15, 1559 with a contingent of more than 1,500 soldiers, settlers, priests, African-American servants and Mexican Indians. Shortly after establishing the settlement, a hurricane destroyed supplies, eventually causing the Spanish to flee the area and not return until the late 1600s. In 1698, Presidio Santa María de Galve became the first permanent settlement in Northwest Florida. Remains of the fort can be found at Naval Air Station Pensacola. The city is proud of its rich heritage, historically significant events and landmarks.

With warm temperatures and more than 340 days of sun, it’s no wonder Pensacola Beach is a water wonderland where you can get your feet wet with adventures sure to leave you with a boatload of favorite vacation memories. Whether you are a parasailing thrill seeker or someone more likely to wade the gentle surf looking for shells, our beaches have plenty to offer.
Charter a sailboat or rent a waverunner. Kayak into a secluded cove or watch beautiful shore birds such as terns and skimmers fish the shallows for their meal. To catch your own meal, we have a fleet of opportunities from deep-water, offshore fishing trips for billfish to casting a fly while sight fishing for pompano on flats along Santa Rosa Sound.
For visitors without sea legs we offer an array of shops, an arcade, miniature golf, go-karts or the quieter pleasures of a nature walk where you might spot an osprey carrying a fish in its talons. To get around the island, the old ways are still the best: bare feet or two wheels. Anywhere on the island you wish to go, a bicycle will easily get you there: from a single-seat “beach cruiser” to something large enough for eight riders. After working up an appetite, the restaurants of Pensacola Beach are sure to satisfy your hunger with fare ranging from fresh seafood and sushi to curly fries, pizza and beachside burgers.

Located on the island’s north side just as you cross the Bob Sikes Bridge, the beach with picnic shelters lies along Santa Rosa Sound and its safe and shallow waters have a special appeal to parents with young children. Fort McRee Ruins. This pre-Civil War era fort served to guard Pensacola Pass, the opening between Pensacola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico on Perdido Key’s eastern-most point. Fires, erosion, hurricanes and time eventually destroyed most of it, leaving a scant memory in scattered foundations and underwater ruins still visited by boaters and snorkelers.

Sandy Facts The Pensacola Bay Area’s sand dunes, often topped with golden sea oats, are a vital part of its ecosystem, helping protect our barrier islands during severe waves and weather. Building and preserving this fragile ecosystem is why we’ve built parking areas and walkovers to lessen the impact on the dunes.

A bit quieter and a little less populated, one of Perdido Key’s primary attractions lies in its “off-the-beaten-path” tranquility. Its very name – Perdido – is Spanish for “lost,” which makes a lot of sense to our visitors. They love to lose themselves in our breathtaking beaches, relaxed pace and distinctive personality. There’s plenty to do right on the island, or you can explore neighboring Orange Beach to the west and Pensacola to the east for more shopping, dining and entertainment options just a short drive away. If it’s events you’re looking for, trust us when we say ours are not quite like anywhere else. The Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival in November brings singer-songwriters from across the country to perform. In the spring the annual Interstate Mullet Toss provides a chance to see who can sling a fish the farthest from Alabama into Florida. The Polar Bear Dip is a charge into the Gulf ’s frigid waters in mid-winter (some folks wear costumes) and Thunder on the Gulf each August presents power boat races with more than 40 vessels racing at speeds approaching 170 mph. The Martini Festival, the day after Thanksgiving, adds more flair and flavor to the island.
Covering the key’s eastern end, this national park offers picnic tables, restrooms and ranger-led programs. Guided barrierisland walks traverse varied beach habitats from dunes to wetlands, forest to marsh. Walkers may spot the tracks of the elusive Perdido Key Beach mouse, scan live oak trees for belted kingfishers or osprey, or perhaps find the salt marsh periwinkle, a small snail that lives on needlerush.
Rosamond Johnson Monument. Located within Johnson Beach, Gulf Islands National Seashore, this monument honors Escambia County resident Rosamond Johnson for his service in the United States Army during the Korean War. He died at the age of 17 while attempting to cross the 38th parallel for a third time to rescue wounded soldiers. His first two trips were successful, and his bravery earned him a posthumous Purple Heart. Tarkiln Bayou Reserve State Park. Located on Bauer Road just a few miles from Perdido Key, the park’s boardwalks and trails lead to beautiful natural areas boasting wildlife such as osprey, raccoons, fox and deer, not to mention fields of pitcher plants, one of only two carnivorous plants in the world. Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, (850) 492–1595, www.floridastateparks.org/tarkilnbayou.
Perdido Key was featured on the Travel Channel’s “Top Secret Beaches of the World” series in 2002—the only continental U.S. destination among the 20 beaches featured worldwide. Steven Letherman, Ph.D., known as “Dr. Beach,” has ranked the beaches of Perdido Key among the nation’s Top 20 Beaches. page 17
