Pedestrian Crossing Improvements Range of Tools Explanations of Tools •
High visibility (florescent) crosswalk signs with arrows: Raises driver awareness; located at crosswalk. Added to crosswalks for additional driver awareness.
•
“Yield Here” Signs: Sign to guide drivers to stop 30 or more feet from the crosswalk. Typically used with sharks teeth.
•
“Sharks teeth” advance warning markings: Guides drivers to stop 30 or more feet back from the crosswalk. Used on streets with multiple lanes in one direction.
•
Centerline signs: Placed in center of road at crosswalk to raise driver awareness of crosswalk.
•
“Your speed” signs: Displays an approaching motorist’s speed on a permanently mounted digital sign.
•
Bulb-outs: Bulb-outs are extensions of the sidewalk into the parking lane in order to shorten the crossing distance. Bulb-outs make the pedestrian more visible to drivers, and cars more visible to pedestrians.
•
Crossing Island: A concrete crossing island in the middle of the street allows a pedestrian to cross one direction of traffic at a time.
