These ayat are widely agreed to be the first verses of the Qur’an revealed to Muhammad. They called on the Prophet to read in the name of your Lord. Every act that the Prophet did, he remembered Allah; there are many ahadith that mention specific du’as that he said before a given activity. See how many du’as you can match to their activity below.

When we say someone is self sufficient, this means they are able to live and thrive completely on their own, without looking to anyone for help or assistance. Being self-sufficient in worldly matters is a good thing – it is better to provide for yourself than to have to ask someone else for help; however it is not good to be self-sufficient from Allah. We should instead be thankful for Allah’s provision and turn to Him first when we need something. Write the word self-sufficient in Arabic here:
There are other words in Arabic that have the same root letters; these are three letters, can you discover what the root letters are by looking at the following related words? Write the root letters below.

Read the story of Khalid ibn al-Walid. He was a great general who served the Muslim Ummah. But it reached a point where people were relying on him more than they were Allah – they would say, “With Khalid we can defeat anyone! Without Khalid, we would definitely lose!” Read and find out what Umar, then the Khalifah, did to call people to depend upon Allah above all others. Write a summary or draw a picture here:

Allah has 99 names, or 99 attributes – qualities that belong only to Him. In these verses, it says that Allah sees; this attribute is called al-Baseer. We know most of the 99 names because they are mentioned in the Qur’an. For the names given below, match each one to the surah in which it is mentioned. Write the English meaning of the attribute in the spaces provided (given below).

The Munafiqun, or hypocrites, were people who were living in Madinah with the Prophet. Outwardly they claimed they were Muslim, but in private they didn’t believe and in some cases plotted against the Muslims. Read in the Seerah about the Munafiqun. Write a summary or draw a picture here.

Look at the verse above. Notice the symbol at the end. There is also a word in the verse that is marked with a line, write that word in the box below.
When reading the Qur’an, if you come across this symbol you should pause, perform sajdah, then return to your reading. If the verse is being recited in the Salah, the Imam will stop, perform sajdah, then stand up again and continue with his recitation. Below is a list of where the sajdah symbols can be found in the Qur’an. Look up each one; check off each one once you have found it.

Starting with ayah 9, scholars have said the surah is referring to Abu Jahl. One day Abu Jahl was passing by the Prophet while he was praying at Maqam Ibrahim, which is next to the Ka’bah. He tried to turn Muhammad away from his prayer, who responded by warning him of his fate. Abu Jahl then said, “What do you threaten me with?! I have the largest group of followers in this valley!” Thus Allah commands him to call his followers, and He will call His angels – who would then be the victor?
