! Extra #1: Tomás and Juan! Tomás and Juan are brothers. They live in Valencia, a city in the east of Spain. They own a restaurant in the city center. They opened the restaurant 5 years ago.! They work very hard to make their customers happy. Tomás wakes up early every morning to go to the market. He buys the ingredients, and Juan cooks most of the food. The restaurant is open all day. In the mornings, Tomás makes coffee for the customers while Juan is in the kitchen, cooking. ! Some people come for lunch, and some people come for dinner. The restaurant also serves beer, wine and drinks. ! The restaurant has sandwiches and salads, and also some typical Spanish foods like paella, omelettes, and sausages. ! When Tomás and Juan finish work at night, they are both very tired. They enjoy owning the restaurant, but it’s a lot of work, and they don’t earn very much money. Most of the money they earn, they spend to keep the restaurant open.! Today, they’re not working, because it’s Monday and the restaurant is closed. Right now, they’re at the beach. Tomás is sunbathing, and Juan is swimming.! Juan has a girlfriend named Marta. They met two years ago. Marta was a customer at the restaurant, and they fell in love. They’re planning to get married next year.! Tomás is single. He had a girlfriend, but they broke up a few weeks ago. He hopes to find a new girlfriend before summer is over.! Next year, they’re going to change the menu at the restaurant. They want to make the restaurant better, so they can earn more money. They also want to hire a new waiter, so they don’t have to work so hard.!

Extra #2: María’s life! María was born in Madrid. When she was growing up, she loved art. She spent her free time drawing. At school, she didn’t like studying English. She just wanted to draw pictures.! When she went to university, her parents convinced her to do something more practical. They told her she would never find a job as an artist.! So she studied Business. But when she finished university, she couldn’t find a job. She needed to learn English, so she went to London. ! She got a job as a secretary in an office in the City. It was a good job, but everything in London was very expensive. She had trouble paying her bills.! Apart from that, she was happy. She was learning English and earning money. She decided to stay in London for a year or two, and then move back to Spain.! However, after a few months in London, she met a man named Martin. Martin was a workmate. He worked in another department. They fell in love, and María decided to stay in England a bit longer. She didn’t like the weather or the food, but she loved Martin and wanted to be with him. ! After two years, they moved into a small flat together. It was still very expensive, but they were happy. After two more years they got married. They had their first child in 2004, a daughter who they named Lucy. In 2006, they had a son, who they named Roger.! Now, they go back to Spain on holiday. Lucy and Roger speak English and Spanish, and they love visiting their grandparents in Madrid. ! María and Martin would love to move back to Spain someday, but now Martin is a manager at the company and is earning more money. They plan to move to Madrid when the economy is better. María hopes that the economy will improve soon, because she still can’t stand the rain!!
