Story of Forefathers Visit Wilford Woodruff, the fourth President of the Church, recounted a vision in which many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence appeared to him and asked that their baptisms and temple work be performed for them in the St. George Temple. On 6 September 1877 President Woodruff recorded: The spirits of the dead gathered around me, wanting to know why we did not redeem them. Said they, 'You have had the use of the Endowment House for a number of years, and yet nothing has ever been done for us. We laid the foundation of the government you now enjoy, and we . . . Remained true to it and were faithful to God.' These were the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and they waited on me for two days and two nights. I thought it very singular, that notwithstanding so much work had been done, and yet nothing had been done for them. The thought never entered my heart, from the fact, I suppose, that heretofore our minds were reaching after our more immediate friends and relatives. I straightway went into the baptismal font and called upon Brother McAllister to baptize me for the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and fifty other eminent men, making one hundred in all, including John Wesley, Columbus, and others. I then baptized him for every President of the United States, except three; and when their cause is just, somebody will do the work for them.

PATRIOTISM—TODAY’S TITLE OF LIBERTY The struggle for liberty and freedom is one of the greatest battles we are experiencing in our world today. It is imperative that our children and families grow up appreciating their freedoms and the privilege of living in this land which is “choice above all other lands.” (Ether 2:10). Teaching our children to be patriotic, to know and understand the Constitution as the source of their freedoms, and to be willing to sacrifice to maintain their liberty is akin to hoisting our own Title of Liberty. President Ezra Taft Benson has said: “Human liberty is the mainspring of human progress. The one great revolution in the world is the revolution for human liberty. This was the paramount issue in the great council in heaven before this earth life. It has been the issue throughout the ages. It is the issue today.... “In that sacred volume of scripture, the book of Mormon, we note the great and prolonged struggle for liberty. We also note the complacency of the people and their frequent willingness to give up their liberty for the promises of a would-be provider. “The record reveals that a man ‘of cunning device...and...many flattering words,’...sought...’to destroy the foundation of liberty which God had granted unto them....’ (Alma 46:10.) “Then Moroni, the chief commander of the armies, dramatically’...rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole. “’...(and he called it the title of liberty) and he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren,...’ (See ibid., 46:1213.) “This great general, Moroni, like the prophets whose words are recorded in the Book of Mormon spoke of the Americas as a chosen land—the land of liberty. He led the people in battle who were willing to fight to ‘maintain their liberty.’ “And the record states:’...that he caused the title of liberty to be hoisted upon every tower which was in all the land,...and thus Moroni planted the standard of liberty among the Nephites.’ (Ibid., 46:36.)... “While this incident occurred some seventy years B.C., the struggle went on through one thousand years covered by this sacred Book of Mormon record. In fact, the struggle for liberty is a continuing one—it is with us in a very real sense today right here on this choice land of the Americas” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1962, pp. 14-15).”

FUN WAYS TO TEACH PATRIOTISM TO YOUR FAMILY: • The month of July is patriotism month (much like we celebrate Christmas all of December.) • Decorate a 4th of July tree. Use lights, ornaments, flags, ribbon, and homemade Title of
Liberty flags on an alpine tree. • Wax creative (or not) and design a patriotic table setting to use on FHE Monday nights all month long. • Decorate! Your mantle, your front porch, your entry hall. Decorations show our children that this holiday is important to us and not just a one day blip on the holiday screen. • Display patriotic documents, paintings, and decor all year round. Make it part of what your children see and live with as you do the Proclamation on the Family. • Design your own Title of Liberty or family creed at a special FHE: “This Family’s Creed is Honor, Duty, and Service to God, Family, and Country.” This creed was penned by my father and designed into a counted cross-stitch by my saintly sister some years ago and is now being passed down to a fourth generation. • Study the story of the Title of Liberty for FHE o Make mini title flags for your 4th of July tree o Have a family testimony meeting about liberty (great for older and extended families gathering for 4th of July festivities.) • As a family, talk to someone who has fought in a war to preserve or extend freedom— perhaps a grandparent who was in WWII, Korea, or a returning Iraq soldier • Have an FHE to study the Constitution (Resource material is included on this handout). Have Dad wear an Uncle Sam hat and/or vest while presenting this lesson. • Have a FHE entitled “Remember.” Teach your children to remember: o What your family stands for o How blessed they are o Where they came from o What covenants they have made o The words of the Title of Liberty In Helaman 5:1—12 as Helaman speaks to his sons, the word “remember” is used 12 times. In the Book of Mormon it is used 240 times, once every other page, and is a vital message of the Book of Mormon. Spencer W. Kimball said, “When you look in the dictionary for the most important word, it may be the word ‘remember.’” The sacrament is the only covenant we repeat time and time again “to always remember him.” To end this FHE put the word “Remember” above your door so that as you and your children leave your home you jump up and touch the word and REMEMBER!
