What is Paternity Leave ????? • Paid or Unpaid time that a father takes off work upon the birth or adoption of a child. • According to survey conducted in 2004, 15% of the employees offer paid paternity leave wherein the average number of paid leave is 25.

Need for taking Paternity Leave • Shared Care : 1.Couples are finding ways to balance parenting and work responsibilities and adjusting solutions as needs of the children change. 2.96% of men and women surveyed agreed that fathers and mothers share equally in the care taking of children.

• Attitude shift among young workers 70% of men aged between 21-29 said they wanted to spend more time with their families and would be willing to sacrifice pay to do so.

• Changing Composition of Families The percentage of dual-earner marriages in on the rise from 49% in 1977 to 67% in 2002.

People’s Viewpoint on Paternity Leave : • People believe that child-rearing is a women’s job • In some cases the spouse's salary is higher than that of the father, making it financially beneficial for him to take the leave. • In cases when there are two or more children and the new born baby arrives then it is necessary that both mom and dad stay at home. • Father’s may want to share the pleasure and responsibility of child rearing.
