Reading Reading, for the fourth grade level, means that students have already developed their print concepts and their phonics skills. Focus is then moved to students increasing their vocabulary and comprehension skills. Students practice reading fluently, examining elements of literature, and describing historical and cultural aspects of literature. Focus is also put on comprehending informational text (expository, functional, and persuasive). Writing Part of writing, for the fourth grade level, is having the ability to go through the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing), use the six traits of writing in writing pieces, and use language to write a story, write about experiences, or respond to literature. Students are also expected to apply their writing skills to write expressively, to produce expository pieces of writing, to write functional text, and to write persuasive text. Math Students, for the fourth grade level, will be expected to expand their number sense skills to work with numbers into the millions, manipulate numbers in fractions, decimals, and percents, add and subtract money through denominations of $1000.00, use multiple strategies to manipulate numbers, and demonstrate fluency of multiplication and division facts through 12. Students will also expand on their data analysis skills, geometry and measurement skills, algebra skills, and their algorithmic thinking skills. Science During science this year, fourth graders will be working with the following FOSS kits: • The Changing Earth Module consists of five investigations that introduce students to these fundamental concepts in earth science: change takes place when things interact; all things change over time; patterns of interaction and change are useful in explaining landforms. • Electric Circuits that teach: o Investigate wires, batteries, bulbs and other electrical "stuff" o Learn the basic properties of electricity, electric circuits, conductors and insulators o Represent parts of a circuit with a circuit diagram and explore switches and diodes • The Structures of Life module consists of five activities dealing with observable characteristics of organisms. Students observe, compare, organize, and care for a selection of organisms. They learn to identify properties of plants and animals and to sort and group organisms on the basis of observable properties. The module provides a basic introduction to fundamental concepts in life science. What you can do at home to support your child’s education

Reading Reading, for the fifth grade level, means that students have already developed their print concepts and their phonics skills. Focus is then moved to students increasing their vocabulary and comprehension skills. Students practice reading fluently, examining elements of literature, and describing historical and cultural aspects of literature. Math Students, for the fifth grade level, will be expected to expand their number sense skills to work with numbers into the millions, manipulate numbers in fractions, decimals, and percents, use multiple strategies to manipulate both positive and negative numbers, and multiply and divide with numbers containing more than 2 digits. Students will also expand on their data analysis skills, geometry and measurement skills, algebra skills, and their algorithmic thinking skills. Science During science this year, fifth graders will be working further in-depth with the following FOSS kits (although they have been exposed to these modules in fourth grade, they will be working on academic extensions of these kits): • The Changing Earth Module consists of five investigations that introduce students to these fundamental concepts in earth science: change takes place when things interact; all things change over time; patterns of interaction and change are useful in explaining landforms. • The Electric Circuits Module that teaches students how to: o Investigate wires, batteries, bulbs and other electrical "stuff" o Learn the basic properties of electricity, electric circuits, conductors and insulators o Represent parts of a circuit with a circuit diagram and explore switches and diodes • The Structures of Life module consists of five activities dealing with observable characteristics of organisms.
