Writing Ex 7 5 2 4 8 3 9 7 1 6 Ex 8 [Suggested answers only] 1 The rain felt like icicles last Wednesday evening, but, amazingly, plenty of spectators were waiting for the football match to begin. As we waited for the football match to begin last Wednesday, the pitch was already covered in puddles of rain. The stadium filled with spectators, our breath creating white puffs of air, and I wondered if the puddles would actually ice over. 2 It seemed as if all of Hong Kong was crammed onto Nathan Road, waiting to watch the start of the Hong Kong Marathon. Elbow to elbow in the bulging crowd, we roared loudly for the runners as the gun fired and the race began. 3 The sun shone down like a welcoming friend as I joined the other windsurfers who were already enjoying the gusts of wind that blew across the sea. 4 As I stood outside the sports shop early Saturday morning, there was a feeling of the quiet before the storm. The sale would begin in five minutes, and I knew that in an hour’s time the place would be wall-to-wall with customers competing to get every last bargain. 5 The moon illuminated the path around the Peak as the Walking Club took its first ever midnight hike. In the distance, the city’s lights looked like clusters of stars in a dark sky.

Model answer ‘I’d enjoy running if we could come here all the time!’ I giggled to my best friend Pat as we set off on our school’s annual cross-country race. It was a beautiful autumn day with a clear blue sky. We were both enjoying the stunning scenery instead of concentrating on running, so we were soon far behind everyone else. Suddenly, Pat dropped to the ground. ‘Ouch’! she yelled, clutching her leg. I could see the tears forming in her big, brown eyes, so I knew she was in real pain. ‘I can’t carry you,’ I said softly. ‘Will you be okay if I run to find help?’ ‘Yes, and please hurry!’ she groaned. The thought of Pat in so much pain made me run faster. Before long, I was passing other classmates. There were no teachers, so I just kept on going, running faster than I’d ever run before. All of a sudden, I heard a huge cheer and I realised that in my eagerness to find a teacher, I had crossed the finishing line. ‘Congratulations!’ beamed the principal. ‘You’re the winner!’ Stunned, I stammered my thanks and shook her hand. Then I remembered the reason why I’d won. A few minutes later, I was in an ambulance going to rescue Pat and give her my good news. Ex 14 Relevant quotation [Suggested answers only] 1 Dramatic entrance What would you do with HK$20,000,000 a year? That’s the question many top football players are lucky enough to ask themselves. While this is the average salary of a top football player, other famous players like David Beckham can earn the equivalent of hundreds of millions of dollars through endorsements and bonuses. Many people believe these salaries are too big, but in this article I will argue that they are necessary to keep the game of football going in the twenty-first century. 2

Funnel Football is one of the most popular sports, with millions of people around the world following the progress of the top teams. Manchester United alone has 50 million fans across the globe. This adoration means that such teams are incredibly wealthy, and their players can expect to earn huge sums of money each year. In this article, I will discuss the impact of top football clubs and their rich players on the sport.

Turnabout I love my life and wouldn’t dream of changing it. However, I might consider altering my life a little bit if I had the chance to play football for Manchester United. What a wonderful life their players have! It must be the best job in the world – being paid millions of dollars to just run around a football pitch. It’s a life most of us can only fantasise about, but sometimes it’s fun to think about the possibility of our fantasies coming true.

Practice for the exam Task 2 Model answer OLYMPIC PASSIONS For two weeks every four years, billions of people around the world watch the Olympic Games. People enjoy watching the passion, determination, drama and celebrations that the Olympics bring. In this article, I will consider three of the events at the Olympics that young people in Hong Kong most enjoy. The first event that young people enjoy is the opening ceremony. It is fascination to see how each host country choreographs the event to reflect their own culture and history. In addition, everyone enjoys the ongoing tradition of the lighted torch being carried around the world to light the Olympic flame.

Young people are also excited about seeing the men’s track events. These events are always full of drama as the raw energy and determination of the athletes is so clear. Young people find it aweinspiring to watch not only the athletes’ power but also their concentration as they push themselves to greater and greater achievements. Finally, young people look forward to the equestrian events. Hong Kong has a long and rich history of horse-racing so it is not surprising that equestrian events are so popular. Young people enjoy seeing the beauty and grace of the magnificent horses whether they are powering around a track or leaping over the gates in the jumping events. To summarise, the three events that young people in Hong Kong most enjoy are the opening ceremony, the men’s track events and the equestrian events.
