[Suggested answers only] Hi Pat How are you? Thanks so much for your e-mail — it was great to hear your news. Have you seen the latest Harry Potter film? If not, you must go! I went to see it last night and it’s brilliant! The film’s effects are amazing. The story’s also the best one so far. JK Rowling’s so clever, isn’t she? (Did you know she’s now richer than the Queen of England? Lucky lady!) Anyway, I’ve got to go since I’ve got lots of homework to do. (Boring!) Love Chris

Model answer Dear Pat Hello! Thanks for your letter. It was great to hear your news. Well done on passing your piano exam! I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to reply. I’ve been really busy because I’ve started working for the school magazine. I really enjoy it, and I’ve made lots of new friends. I write all the film reviews so I get free tickets to lots of films. Isn’t that great? I’ve watched two this week — ‘Love against the Odds’ and ‘The Pearl of the Orient’. I recommend seeing ‘Love Against the Odds’, a romantic comedy set in a Macau casino. It’s a fun, cheerful film. The plot is pretty obvious — a wealthy gambler falls in love with a waitress in the casino — but you actually believe that the couple have fallen in love because the acting is so good. The script’s great too, except for the disappointing ending. I think you’ll like the film though, because you love comedies. It’s really funny, and you’ll laugh out loud. (Well, I did!) Anyway, I have to rush off to football practice. Let me know what you think of the film when you see it. Bye for now Chris Ex 9 [Suggested answers only] 2 I believe celebrities should be good role models. 3 That actor frequently appears in the tabloid newspapers for behaving inappropriately. 4 I look forward to hearing from you soon. 5 In addition, I am concerned that some celebrities who are extremely thin may be suffering from eating disorders. 7 I would enjoy working in your restaurant very much as I have heard that it is very popular with famous people. 8 I was shocked to discover that my table, which I had booked several weeks in advance, had been given to a celebrity. Ex 10 [Suggested answers only] 1 Dear Sir / Madam 2 I am writing concerning / regarding 3 that / which sell 4 First / Firstly, I believe / think 5 should be enforced 6 a wide range / large number of people 7 rely on royalties from the sales of their films 8 these creative people will not get the income they expect and deserve 9 On the other hand / Nevertheless / However / Nonetheless 10 Legal VCDs and DVDs, which can cost as much HK$200, are too expensive for many people 11 they would not be able to watch their own, legally bought films. 12 I believe that piracy is wrong and that the income of people working on films should be protected. However, I hope that VCD and DVD manufacturers will also consider reviewing their prices and marketing techniques

Practice for the exam Task 2 Model answer Dear Sir / Madam Re: The importance of celebrities as role models I am writing regarding the issue of celebrities acting inappropriately recently. I believe that celebrities should take more responsibility for their public behaviour because it is important for them to be good role models. Firstly, I think celebrities should be good role models because young people copy their behaviour. Teenagers want to be just like the celebrities they admire, so they follow their behaviour. Therefore, if a celebrity smokes, drinks or fights, it can encourage young people to do so too. Secondly, celebrities should be good role models because they can influence society. People look up to celebrities and are affected by their opinions and behaviour. Celebrities should use this power in a positive way. For example, many celebrities are involved with charitable causes, such as sponsoring a charitable campaign or acting as a charity ambassador. This involvement encourages others to help those who are less fortunate. Finally, celebrities should be good role models to show their appreciation of their privileged lifestyles. Celebrities have large incomes, big houses, and personal assistants and trainers. They are also invited to glamorous parties and events, and often receive many free gifts. It is difficult to excuse inappropriate behaviour when they have so much good fortune. To summarise, I believe it is important for celebrities to be good role models because young people look up to them, because their actions can change society and because they should be more appreciative of the fortunate lives they lead.
