Gilgit to Chitral – Part 3 – Shandur Pass Plateau

After the 1:10 climb up to 3700m we reached the 12km long Shandur pass, a desolate yet beautiful place, with many lakes surrounded by snowy peaks. After the struggle up it was brilliant to have such an easy ride at such an altitude despite the bumpy road.
The plateau is also home to the highest Polo ground in the world, where each year in July, Gilgit play Chitral in the most prestigious of the Northern Areas many Polo matches. This year Chitral won....'They had really good horses this year' we were told by people in Gilgit. On the top of the pass there is this wonderful sign:
