ORCESTER is a city of hills and valleys. Hills little and big rise in all direct ions over the more than seven miles of north and south dimension and the nearly seven miles of east and west. Between them lie valleys,-some broad. some narrow . The hills grow higher as they rang e from south to north and from east to west, so that. averag ing heights above the sea level, a plane is formed that uptilts sharply northward and westward. From the east the ascent is from the water level of Lake Quinsigarnond, 356 feet above the sea, the lowest point in Worcester , to the 1,020 feet of the hilltop that lies on the Paxton border, south of the Worcester-Paxton state road. which is the highest point in Worcester. From the south the land rises from 412 feet at the Sewage Purifica­ [ 3]

tion Works at Quinsigarnond to the lofty summit of Winter Hill on the edge of Holden, 980 feet in the air. Thus the extreme variation of elevation north and south is more than 550 feet, and that from east to west is more than 650 feet. The tilt of the land plane of Worcester is the more highly emphasized because the upward slope extends well beyond the city's borders. On the west it terminates two miles beyond the Paxton line at the summit of the ridge of Mt. Asnebumskit, 1,407 feet, the highest point between Mt. Wachusett and Long Island Sound, and, south of Wachusett. between the Connecticut River and the Atlantic Ocean. From Asnebumskit the high land extends around to the northern border of Worcester. into the hill masses which stretch eastward from Pine Hill in Holden, 1.140 feet above the sea. Worcester people who go to the White Mountains to seek the benefits of loftier altitudes are more apt to make their summer residence lower down rather than higher up . Excepting in the very heart of the mountains the eleva­ tions of most of the resorts of the mountain and lake country of New Hampshire are less than those of the Heart of the Commonwealth especially those of the better residential neighborhoods. the city the basis of comparison. the result is still less favorable to the Granite State. For example, North Conway is 521 feet above the sea, which is 40 feet lower than the crest of Chestnut Street. Jackson, on the very edge of the Presidential Range, is 759 feet, and Plymouth, on the Pemigewasset, is 483 feet, almost exactly level with City Hall. North Woodstock, higher up the Pemigewasset, at the entrance to Franconia Notch, is 739 feet. Lake Winnepesaukee is 500 feet. It will easily be seen that with the city's own lofty hills, and with suburbs like Paxton, 1, 130 feet, and Rutland, 1,200 feet. and with summits like Mt. Asnebumskit, 1,407 feet, and Mt. Wachusett, 2,108 feet. all easily accessible and not far beyond the borders, Worcester people, excepting to procure change of scene, need never seek summer resi­ dence elsewhere. Such a variation of height has Worcester, in many cases between points situated close together, as to afford an interesting study of comparisons. The list of city elevations here given, furnished by the office of the City Engineer, provides the basis upon which can be reckoned very closely the height above the sea of practically any spot in the city, and the relative height of that spot as compared with that of any other spot. In using the table (S]

it is well to bear in mind that the elevations given are above sea level, and that perhaps the most convenient basic level for practical comparisons is that of City Hall, 481 feet. To make more complete the understanding of the heights of Worcester. and for the knowledge of those who journey through Central Massachusetts, a supplementary list of altitudes of many of the loftier hills of Worcester County is given. together with a few of the more distant summits which are visible from the higher points of the city and its environs . Included also are the altitudes of the towns and villages in the vicinity of Worcester; of the various stations on the railroads centering in or passing through Worcester; and of various other points of interest.
