Overhead Line Conductors

Introduction - Oman Cables Industry (SAOG) Oman Cables Industry (SAOG) was established in 1984 and started commercial production of building Wires in 1987. Setting a 10 year target period to manufacture L.V. Power Cables, Control Cables, Low Smoke Flame Retarding (LSF/FRLS) Cables, Over Head Line Conductors and Flexible Cables for both domestic and export markets, OCI was able to fulfill the mission in merely 8 years. Today, OCI is the largest cable manufacturer in Sultanate of Oman. Beside local sales, OCI exports to all the GCC countries, the Middle East, the Far East, Vietnam, Yemen, U.K., Pakistan, etc. The company’s reputation, manufacturing capabilities, quality and reliability bagged it large orders from world renowned EPC contractors like Snamprogetti – Italy, Snamprogetti – France, Chiyoda-Foster – Japan/U.K. OCI, in a short span of time, has successfully made its mark in 4 continents of the world against tough international competition. OCI products are also approved and registered with Department of Electrical Services, Ministry of Development, Negara, Brunei Darussalam. Located in Rusayl, the Sultanate’s largest industrial complex, the company is equipped with ultra-modern Plant & Machinery. OCI gives you a choice in wires, cables and conductors as per British standards, IEC specification, MEW-UAE, WED-Abudhabi, DEWA-Dubai, MEW Bahrain, Ministry of Defence and to other national and international standards. In 1994 the company was accredited with the ISO 9002 certification in remarkably short period of 6 months in line with OCI’s proven capability to meet it’s challenges. Added to it, OCI is now accredited with the ISO 9001- design capabilities certification, which further bears testimony to OCI’s consistency in Quality Management. The company is also a proud recipient of His Majesty’s trophy for the Best Industry Award in the year 1991, 1992, 1996 and 1997 – a unique award for it’s achievements. Certificate of Honour for excellence in the year 1993, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2001 & 2002 were further awarded to OCI’s success. The company continues to enjoy the position of the top ten best performing companies in the Sultanate since and has shown a steep rise in growth. This demonstrates the confidence the customer has reposed in OCI. The company draws strength from its highly experienced staff, design & project management resources and stringent Quality Assurance procedures to deliver total commitment to quality, reliability, safety and customer satisfaction. OCI is also a proud recipient of the Omani Quality Mark. The Omani Quality Mark is considered a distinguishing mark for the quality of products that carry it. The licence to use the Omani Quality Mark granted by the Directorate General for Specifications and Measurements is an undisputed proof of quality and conformity with the standards. As a part of its strategy of becoming a global player, OCI is now targeting the International Market. Besides the GCC Market, OCI has also entered in to other countries and is geared up to face the new challenges of the global market. Catering to large EPC projects for a wide range of wires, cables and conductors has been OCI’s core competency, which has resulted in sizeable orders from many multinational companies across the globe. In the year 1999, OCI has successfully launched and started delivering solutions to the Instrumentation cables. Keeping in line with this success, the company has ventured into other hi-tech products, viz., special cables, Oil & Gas cables, etc., to its existing line of products. OCI is humbly proud of its efforts and success and believes success is not a destination but a journey. It will strive further to achieve even higher pinnacles of success and continue to offer better service and satisfaction to its distributors and end users. In this brochure we give details of Overhead Line Conductors. OCI prides on its ability to offer products to each customer specific needs quickly, efficiently and with an assurance of product quality. Last Revision Date: November 2003

Overhead Line Conductors

AAC – All Aluminium Conductors All-aluminuim conductors are the most favoured type for use in the construction of relatively short span distribution schemes and are in common use on lines for voltage up to 60 KV. Another frequent application for all-aluminium conductor is in flexible busbar connections. Although aluminium-to-copper connections can be made, it is better to use aluminium conductors for service connections, as various forms of covered cable being available for this purpose. The data sheets show the most common sizes of conductors but other sizes, to any recognized standards or customer specification can also be supplied. AAC insulated with XLPE or PVC can be supplied as per the customers’ requirement.

Overhead Line Conductors

Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced Construction

The mixed construction of ACSR makes it a very flexible medium from a design point of view. By varying the relative proportions of aluminium and steel the ideal conductor for any particular application can be produced. Generally, ACSR consists of a galvanized steel core of 1 wire, 7 wires or 19 wires surrounded by concentric layers of aluminium wire. When a conductor with a high current carrying capacity and comparatively low strength is required, special constructions are available with a high aluminium content. Protection against Corrosion

A coating of non-oxidizing grease is normally applied to the steel cores of all conductors, in addition to the protection offered by the galvanizing of the steel wires. One or more layers of the aluminium wires can, if required, be supplied partially or fully greased. OCI ensures complete freedom from contamination by other metals during the entire manufacture of ACSR conductors. CONDUCTOR SECTIONS

Overhead Line Conductors

All-Aluminium Alloy Conductors This section deals with heat-treatable magnesium silicon type aluminium alloys to BS EN 50182, the electrical and mechanical properties of which all fall within the values suggested by Publication 104 of the international Electrotechnical Commission. Conductors to all other recognized specifications can also be supplied. The alloys referred to have higher strength but lower conductivity than pure aluminium. Being lighter, alloy conductors can sometimes be used to advantage in place of the more conventional ACSR; having lower breaking loads than the latter, their use becomes particularly favourable when ice and win loadings are low. Overhead Line Conductors

PVC-Covered Copper Conductors as per BS 6485 These conductors are meant for Overhead Power Lines. In these two types of insulations are used. 1) Type 8 PVC insulation is used for maximum 650V r.m.s. between conductor to conductor and 250V between conductor and earth. These are used for :a) To guard against contact with telecommunication lines b) Lines accessible from residential buildings 2) Type 16 PVC insulation is used for voltage above 650V and upto 11KV between conductors. These are also used in proximities to telecommunication lines and crossings with them.

Drum Handling Instructions (Packing, Transportation, Storage, Unwinding)

Following instructions should be followed for handling conductor drums :1) Generally conductor ends should be available for inspection and testing. 2) During unloading operation drums must not be thrown or dropped from a height, from wagons, trucks and ships. A ramp or crane may be used for unloading operation. If neither is available a temporary ramp may be arranged. 3) The drums should be rolled only the way arrow mark on the drum is shown. If it is rolled the other way the cable will start unwinding and will become loose. 4) The drums should be stored on a firm surface, preferably on concrete surface. Storage of drums on a soft surface may result in drums sinking, making it extremely difficult to move the drums later on. 5) The drums should never be stored flat i.e. the flanges being kept horizontal to the ground. The cables should also never be wound from this position. Unwinding of cable from this position may result in the cable getting twisted which is not rectifiable. 6) If for some reason it is necessary to rewind the cable on a different drum the barrel of the new drum should not be less than the existing drum.
