Name: ___________________________ Chapter 1 Part 1: Vocabulary: Directions: Read over the following definitions so that when you come across the word in chapter one, you will understand the meaning. Greaser Words: Rodeo: a contest of skill in which cowboys rope cattle and ride wild or partly tamed horses, or saddled broncs, and bulls Fuzz: is a slang word meaning “police” two-by-four : a piece of lumber of any length that is four inches wide by two inches thick. Drive-in: outdoor movie theater where people watch the movies from their cars. Soc Words: Mustangs and Covairs: sporty looking cars of the 1960s Madras: a fine cotton cloth, usually striped or plaid used to make clothes such as shirts, skirts etc.

Other words Page 3 Asset: n. Asset: a benefit, an advantage

Page 4 hitched – to hook one thing into another so they are connected “Not like the Socs, … a public half-conscious: not fully aware disgrace one day and an asset to society the next.”

Page 5 madras (see “Greaser Words” above suffocate (suf-fo-cate) to deprive somebody of breathing air

Souped-up – “tricked out” or improved in some way “Greasers are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped-up cars…” Page 6 Cowlick: a tuft of hair growing in a different direction from the rest of the hair on somebody’s head and usually sticking up

Page 11 rarities (form of the word rare and the word rarity) – something that happens rarely or very seldom or of being very unusual suspicious - creating or liable to create suspicion; doubtful; distrustful

cooler – dated slang for prison

Page 8 Sympathetic (form of the word sympathy) – Filled with compassion (the ability to understand or share somebody else’s feelings)

Savvy –- in the story used as slang for “do you understand?” Dictionary definition: to understand something, especially what somebody has said

sarcasm – remarks that mean the opposite of what they seem to say and are intended to mock (treate somebody or something with scorn or contempt)

Page 15 “marked lousy” – slang for being thought of by others as of being of poor character; not respected by others. 10. sarcasm Part 3: Comprehension Check When you finish the chapter, do the following: 1. Write a chapter summary by following these steps: a. First, complete the 5+ Ws (Who?, What happened?, Where? When? Why?, and How did the“what happened” make the character(s) feel/react? b. Second, use the 5+Ws information to write a two to three sentence summary. 2. Think of a chapter title and explain why you chose it. 3. Write a double journal entry: a. Find and copy a meaningful piece of the text (It can be a piece of dialogue or a piece of description.) b. Copy it into your notebook c. Under the copied text draw a line under it to separate it from your reaction/response that you will write below this line. d.
