Our building is stone, heritage, traditional. As a community, we are young, old and in-between, rich, poor, employed and retraining, multicultural, families and singles, Bible scholars, seekers. More than the building itself, WE are the church, and we are diverse and inclusive.

Change and Growth at First In March, 1887, ten people joined hands to birth a new church. Its irst meeting was as a Sunday School at the back of Blair’s saloon!

From this humble beginning, First Baptist Church has been a witness to God’s unchanging truth expressed in a radically changing city. We thank God for generation after generation of our people’s vision and commitment.

C. We often use the term without realizing what it means. When the 1st century disciples of Jesus sought a word to describe their community, they chose the word “ecclesia,” from which we get “church.” N ’ . The word did not refer to anything overtly religious! The word referred to people gathering to conduct the business of the city, gathering to carry out civic responsibilities. The early disciples saw themselves as people with a mission relative to the city city. And is what it means to be the church. We are ordinary, broken people people, summoned by and gathered around the Risen and Reigning Jesus to share in His life and to conduct the business of the city of God right here in the city! Won’t you come and join us? Rev. Darrell Johnson, Senior Minister
