Our Lady of Sorrows Church

From the Pastor’s Desk My Dear People: It is the aim of the priests to know our 1352 parishioners. However, with so many families, and, with some families coming and going in and out of the parish, it is difficult. The greatest help for me and the other priests who come and go every two years is the pictorial directory; and yet only 50% are in our 2008 directory. The only solution to the problem is to ask for your help. If you are not in the pictorial directory, please submit a picture for a private booklet (office use only) which will be supplementary to our 2008 published directory. If you do not have a picture please have it quickly snapped by John Tighe who will be in front of the church next Sunday. The absolute best way for us to connect faces with names is simply to have everyone’s picture. We need this for sudden deaths and five other reasons. No beauty contest, just identification. In about ten days we celebrate one of this country’s greatest national holidays, Thanksgiving. I see it as a religious holiday, because THANKS to whom? The vast majority of this country believes in God; but we just don’t think of God enough on this holiday. The origin of the feast started with pilgrims who were grateful to God for the land they discovered and hoped the natives here would share it with them. Prepare now mentally as we approach Thanksgiving and make a list of all the things with which we need to approach the Almighty with endless gratitude. If we don’t prepare, days ahead of time, it will come and go with only thoughts of family, turkey…and football! Three days after Thanksgiving we will celebrate the first Sunday of Advent. The Church says: “Start preparing for the great feast of Christmas four weeks in advance.” Incidentally, our annual Advent tree will appear the first Sunday of Advent. Since

Christmas is the ultimate of God sharing with us, we need to share with others. Instead of houses in Mexico, we will build a school in Bangladesh in the Hill sections where there are few any Muslims, but rather tribal people desperately in need of an education. Archbishop Marino, priest from our diocese, assures me that the area is ripe for conversion to Christianity and it is the schools run by the Catholic Church which are the great instrument of conversion for them. The Immaculate Heart of Mary Guild has been busy drawing little schools on envelopes to hang on the Advent tree, hoping that one of your Christmas gifts to Jesus would be to take an envelope and make a donation toward this worthy cause. Please submit a photo or have your picture taken next Sunday; think of Thanksgiving spiritually before it gets here; and plan a spiritual Advent, which starts this month, November 29th. With prayers and blessings, Fr.
