ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We are extremely thankful to our Reporting Officer Mr. Amit Ghosh, who acted as a facilitator throughout the duration of the project and endowed us with his valuable suggestions. The project would not have been completed without the support and cooperation of the employees of VRTI. We sincerely thank all the employees of VRTI at Mandvi, Bhujpur, Nakhatrana and Nalia centres for giving us the required information. We are grateful to Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) for providing us this great opportunity of working with an organisation. We are thankful to our OTS coordinator Prof. Jayant Negi who extended whatever help we needed for completing this project. Last but not the least we are indebted to our faculty guide Prof. K. V. Raju for his valuable guidance and encouragement without which it would have been very difficult for us to take up this project. Anshul Goyal Deepak Dubey

Executive Summary Student’s Name: Anshul Goyal, Deepak Dubey Organization: Shri Vivekananda Research and Training Institute, Mandvi Reporting Officer: Mr. Amit Ghosh Faculty Guide: Prof. K.V. Raju Project Title: Organizational Understanding Objectives: To develop an understanding of what an organisation is all about, to learn functioning of the organization, structure and its activities and to understand the organization in terms of its ideology, strategy, culture, and its interaction with the external environment. Scope of Study: The study covers all the four centres of VRTI in Kutch district operating in different talukas namely Mandvi, Bhujpur, Nakhatrana and Nalia. Methodology: We conducted our study in two stages. First we observe the working procedure in the organisation and tried to understand the culture of the organisation and its interaction with external environment. In the second stage of our study we prepared a questionnaire for doing a sample survey of the employees. In this questionnaire we covered the questions related to skills of the employees and their thinking and understanding about the organisation. At various point of times we took help of secondary sources also. We studied annual reports and other records of the organisation. About VRTI:VRTI was set up at the initiative of Mr. K. C. Shroff for the development of Kutch region. It was registered as a Non Government Organisation (NGO) in 1980 under ‘Bombay Charitable Trust Act 1950’. The mission of VRTI is integrated and sustainable development of the Kutch region, working largely to facilitate the people / farmers and rural poor of the area in becoming self reliant. Initially they started working in the fields of water conservation, dairy, tannery and other livelihood generation activities. Later on they got some projects from government departments and other funding agencies and now they are working on both granted projects as well as self generated projects. Watershed management, drinking water, agriculture research and livelihood generation activities are major fields of intervention for the organization currently. It has developed good contacts with national and international funding agencies and it does not face any problem of lack of funds. The organization has a complex organization structure with high level of horizontal and vertical differentiation and moderate level of spatial differentiation. There is high formalization and high centralization in the organization. We can say that organization has divisional structure where every branch works as a different division and every branch has machine bureaucracy structure. Working culture is very good in organization as all the employees treat each other as friends. Management is traditional in nature and decision making process is very slow. There is no proper performance appraisal system in the organization and Employee motivation level is very low especially in the case of temporary employees. Turnover rate is also very high.
