Faculty Guide : Prof. S.K. Mitra V. Student’s Name : Ashvin Choudhary(25006), Dev Kumar Dubey (25012) Objective: This study is aimed to assess the self sustainability and institutional viability of CBOs in some selected model project sites situated at the Halia block of the Mirzapur district in Uttar Pradesh. These CBOs are created by the NGO, Arthik Anusandhan Kendra. Scope of the Study: The scope of the study is limited to the three clusters we have visited which were selected as the sample and these findings can not be applied to other areas and at best it can be representative for the CBOs came into existence at the similar time. Methodology: The project undertaken by us is mainly to study the functioning of the CBOs as well as to study their viability for the purpose of the organization. During the project we covered six villages spread over three clusters (Nadna, Kusyera, and Harra). For the purpose we selected two villages in each these three clusters where the organization has been working at least for more than five years. Findings: a. The education program can’t be left to the mercy of government infrastructure, and at least the primary schools started should be continued as well as expanded to higher classes. b. Though the awareness level has increased there is a still lot to be done in order to provide the target group with effective healthcare round the year. c. The target group has started taking pride which they have done in the field of watershed; they are not inclined towards further growth but just trying to maintain the existing assets. This mental block should be broken. d. In the field of social justice CBO’s have done a lot to increase the awareness and the difference is clearly visible. e. The SHGs are highly sustainable as well as effective. f. The federation has done a commendable job of uniting the tribes as well as that of working as a pressure group, yet the neglect of democratic processes can be a major constraint in the future. Recommendations: a. Partner with other organizations to obtain the necessary expertise or specialized services for certain populations, such as hard-to-employ individuals. b. Ensure staff understands work requirements, time limits, and other restrictions that affect how they serve participants. c. Enhance data collection and reporting systems and use the outcome data to improve the CBO’s performance. d. Identify sustainable funding sources to ensure the CBO’s solvency and help leverage interest among other funding partners. ii
