CAREER HISTORY Summary: • •





DR. DEIVA OSWIN STANLEY is an environmentalist, marine scientist, and ecologist with more than 11 years of professional experience in various coastal habitat projects. Since 2000, she has been a mangrove restoration trainer, working with various stakeholders (government, academe, research institutes, NGOs, and communities) in an effort to mitigate coastal erosion and coastal and marine habitat destruction. Through her various projects with the Gujarat Ecology Commission, the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE), and PREPARE, Chennai, she has been involved in initiatives for the improvement of coastal and marine ecology through appropriate shoreline management strategies. She holds a Ph D in Botany from the Bharathidasan University in Tamil Nadu, India and M.Phil degree in Marine Biology and Oceanography from the Center of Advanced Study in Marine Biology.

Dorani, Kuala Selangor Location: University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Position: Post Doctoral Research Fellow; Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences, University of Malaya Main Project Features: Coastal Zone Management using Eco Engineering options -To establish mangroves and suitable coastal species as coastal buffers; To stabilize wave-impacted coastal habitats with hard structures eg. L-Block and geo-structures; To protect eroding coastline, habitats and communities; To enhance economic resources and livelihoods of local communities but introducing income generating activities within the coastal zones; To establish seaweed, sea-grass and other economic species via natural selection

Demonstrates and teaches EMR technology to government agencies, university personnel, and coastal communities. Position Held: Consultant Activities Performed: • Provided support to communities for the regeneration of 150 ha of mangrove forest. • Conducted community mobilization, rapport building, training courses on mangrove ecology and plantation models and techniques, site surveys, biodiversity documentation, trainers’ training, participatory rapid appraisal (PRA) and rapid rural appraisal (RRA), and mangrove restoration training for the community, NGOs, and other stakeholders. Duration: 2005 (7 months) Name of Project: MANGROVE PLANTATION PROJECT, INDIA Location: Jetty-Dahej Gandhar Complex, India Client: Indian Petrochemical Limited Main Project Features: The Project aimed to address the problem of coastal erosion in the jetty area through mangrove plantations. Position Held: Consultant Activities Performed: • Conducted surveys to assess the damage and losses in the coastal habitats as a result of the tsunami. • Assisted in the shore and residence cleaning activities. • Recommended protection measures against future incidents through mangrove reforestation. • Prepared a feasibility report on coastal and marine area development vis-à-vis livelihood opportunities of coastal communities.

Duration: July 2002 – June 2004 (2 yrs) Name of Assignment: TECHNICAL MANAGER (MANGROVES), GUJARAT ECOLOGY COMMISSION, INDIA Location: Valdodara, India Main Project Features: The Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC) was established by the Government of Gujarat in 1992 with the following mandate: (i) to provide an organization that plans and works for restoration of ecologically degraded areas; (ii) to arouse ecological consciousness among the people of Gujarat and to develop a conservation ethos in the state; (iii) to undertake on its own or with the support of other agencies, restoration of disturbed ecosystems of the State, with special emphasis on degraded lands; (iv) to create institutions and organizations necessary for achieving the objectives of GEC; and (v) to act as the State's single umbrella for accreditation of various NGOs eligible for funding for activities aimed at ecological restoration of degraded ecosystems, and allocation of funds to various non-government agencies for ecological restoration programs.
