April 10, 2008 Mr. Oscar de Rojas, Director Financing for Development Office UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs 2 UN Plaza, Room DC2-2150 New York, NY 10017 Via Email at:
[email protected] Dear Mr. de Rojas: InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based international development and humanitarian nongovernmental organizations, was actively involved in the International Conference on Financing for Development in 2002 in Monterrey and in follow-up in the U.S. I am writing to you in regards to our participation at the Doha Review Conference 29 November-2 December this year. The 165 organizational members of the InterAction coalition work in every developing country and were very involved in the lead up to the Monterrey Conference and in the conference itself. Our former President and CEO Mary McClymont (now at the Ford Foundation) represented the NGO community on one of the roundtables. Following the Monterrey Conference, InterAction worked closely with the U.S. government to monitor implementation its commitments. This contributed to the initiation of the US government’s PEPFAR and the Millennium Challenge Account initiatives. This year, we are convening a plenary session on Financing for Development at our annual conference in May. Mr. Butch Montes from your office will serve as one of the panelists. InterAction has an important role to play in linking the global Financing for Development process with the international NGO community. We also have expanded our advocacy with the U.S. government on FfD and on financing specifically for U.S. bilateral assistance. I plan to lead a delegation of U.S. international NGOs to the Doha Review Conference and would like to express my interest in serving on a roundtable, as InterAction did in Monterrey. I would like to discuss with you which roundtables are planned and where we could make the greatest contribution. Moving forward, InterAction will leverage the Doha Review Conference to intensify our advocacy in the U.S. for both increased and more effective aid for development and humanitarian assistance. I will call your office soon to schedule a phone conversation to follow-up on this letter. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Sam Worthington President & CEO, InterAction.
