The aim of the Orientation Programme is to facilitate your integration into the Swedish way of life and the academic system. We believe it is important that you participate in this programme as it will help you to get to know our university and its associations, the city of Örebro and its surroundings, among other things. It will also help you to get to know Swedish students and the other international students. Almost all exchange students who come to Örebro University participate in the Orientation Programme. Please note that you as a participant in the Orientation Programme always have to carry the name tag for entrance to the activities. The name tag will be distributed during the arrival weekend. Items on the programme marked with (*) are open only for you who pay the fee for the Orientation Programme. However, if you choose not sign up for the whole Orientation Programme there are still some activities you are welcome to join!

Welcome to Örebro University!

Arrival Weekend Saturday January 13 - Sunday January 14 • Days of Arrival and Settling in International Fadderiet, will pick you up in Örebro, give you the necessary information and install you in your room. • Meet New Friends at Kårhuset Kårhuset (the Students’ Union Building) will be open as long as international students are arriving. The Swedish students from the International Fadderiet will help you and answer all your questions. There will be possibilities to have a cup of coffee or tea, some snacks and to meet new friends. Evening Activities

Time: Saturday 21.00 Sunday 20.00 Meeting point: Kårhuset We meet on Saturday evening to go to the city centre to check out Örebro’s nightlife. Remember to bring your ID! Sunday evening we will order something to eat together. Please make your order and pay before Sunday 16.00 in Kårhuset. •

Opportunity to Rent a Bike

Time: Sunday, time to be announced. Meeting point: Kårhuset We arrange for you to rent a bicycle for the duration of your study period. International Office November 2006

During the orientation programme you will be divided into groups and the information about which group you belong to will be posted on the notice board at the International Office and in Kårhuset during the arrival weekend.

Orientation Programme Monday January 15 • Opening Ceremony!

Time: 10.00 Location: Consert Hall, Musikhögskolan Vice-chancellor Janerik Gidlund welcomes you to Örebro University! Introduction of the staff of the International Office. Presentation of International Fadderiet. "Who are you?" A short presentation of yourself: name, home university, study programme and why you chose Örebro. Presentation of the Orientation Programme. Tour of the Campus. • (*) Lunch

Location: Restaurant Kraka, Långhuset • (*) City Tour

Time: 13.45 Meeting Point: Outside Kårhuset We will all to go the city and go on a tour in the city centre to help you find the most important places. The city tour includes a visit to the City Hall with a welcome meeting arranged by the City of Örebro. Evening activity • Fadder Evening

Time: 19.00 Meeting Point: Kårhuset Fadderiet will arrange an evening for exchange students and fadders. Here you will have the opportunity to meet your fadder, if you did not meet him/her during the arrival weekend. Wear warm clothes since some of the activities will take place outdoors.

Information about the Students' Union

Time: 11.00 Location: Lecture Hall T (HST), Teknikhuset In this session you will get information about the role and organization of the Students’ Union, what is happening in the Students’ Union Building and how you can take part in these activities. Furthermore you will get information about Campushälsan (medical service), the sport facilities on campus and how to get a membership card for the University Sports Club "ÖUIF" and other student associations. •

Information about Swedish Laws

Time: 11.45 Location: Lecture Hall T (HST), Teknikhuset A police officer is invited to inform about some Swedish laws and regulations concerning traffic, alcohol, narcotics etc. •

Library Information

Time: Group II at 13.30, Group I at 15.00 Location: University Library Information about what services the library can offer you, how to use data bases at the library, how to find literature, which foreign newspapers you can find, rules and regulations for loans etc. •

Practical Information

Time: Group I at 13.30, Group II at 15.00 Location: Lecture Hall F (HSF), Forumhuset The International Office will give you crucial information about accommodation, living in Örebro and studying at Örebro University. N.B.! attendance is obligatory!

Evening Activity • (*) Play together – Sports’ and Games’ Evening

Time: 19.00 Meeting Point: Kårhuset Wear warm clothes! No other equipment or experience necessary.

Thursday January 18 • Time for Classes During Morning Hours. Information will be given during the departmental information meetings during Tuesday and Wednesday. •

(*) Choose Your Afternoon Activity! 1. Visit to Gustavsvik the swimming centre with out- and indoor pools, wave-pools and water-slides! Bring your swimming-suit and towel! You pay your entrance fee yourself (approx. SEK 100). 2. Visit to IKEA for a shopping afternoon! 3. Innebandy (Floor ball) Tournament – join the international team or watch your fellow exchange students play! 4. To be announced.

It is possible to go by bike to Gustavsvik but for the other activities we will take the local buss.

(*) Wadköping and Visit to Örebro Castle – Group I

Time: 13.15 Meeting Point: Outside Kårhuset We will take the local bus, walk, or use our bicycles to go to Wadköping – an open-air museum in the middle of Örebro, on the banks of the river Svartån. Wadköping is a living cultural history museum with at variety of craft shops. After a coffee/tea break in the café in Wadköping there is time for you to walk around on your own before we walk together along the river to the castle where we will have a guided tour. For over 700 years Örebro Castle has kept a watchful eye on everyone crossing the bridge over the River Svartån. For the last 200 years it has been the residence of the county governor, but large parts of the castle are open to the general public.

(*) Örebro Castle and Wadköping – Group II

Time: 13.15 Meeting Point: Outside the Entrance Building We will go (by bus or by bike) to Örebro Castle. For over 700 years Örebro Castle has kept a watchful eye on everyone crossing the bridge over the River Svartån. For the last 200 years it has been the residence of the county governor, but large parts of the castle are open to the general public After the visit to the castle we will walk along the river to Wadköping – an open-air museum in the middle of Örebro, on the banks of the river Svartån. Wadköping is a living cultural history museum with at variety of craft shops. We will have a coffee/tea break in the café in Wadköping and then there is time for you to walk around on your own. • Evening Activity Take the opportunity to spend the evening with your fadder group.

Saturday January 20 • (*) Departure to Ånnaboda

Time: 10.30 Brickebacken, 11.00 Campus. Meeting points: Brickebacken and Campus. Ånnaboda is an open-air recreation area where you will spend Saturday and Sunday and really get to know each other. Various outdoor activities will be organized. Ånnaboda is situated by a lake in the Blue Mountains, and has nice walking paths. We will have lunch on Saturday at the conference centre. Bring warm clothes suitable for outdoor activities and a swim-suit if you want to go to the sauna. You also need to bring sheets. You will get more detailed information about this trip during the Orientation week!

Time: 19.00 Location: Kårhuset As the closing event of the Orientation Programme we invite you to dinner and dance! The Smörgåsbord, a typical Swedish buffet, will be served and fadderiet will entertain you before the dance begins!

Various On Monday January 15 lunch is included in the orientation programme. There will be coffee/tea in the café in Wadköping Friday afternoon. The trip to Ånnaboda includes lunch, dinner and breakfast. Drinks are not included in the “Smörgåsbord”. There is a bar in the restaurant where you can buy soda, wine and beer. January is normally a cold month in Sweden so remember to dress warm when you participate in the outdoor activities in the orientation programme. International Office November 2006

On January 23 there will be a Student Fair in the hall outside the Kraka restaurant and in Café Almby in the Long Building from 11.00 to 15.00.Various student organisations will introduce themselves and their activities to the new students on campus. Lot of useful information, offers and competitions!

Opening Evening at Kåren January 19, 21.00 Location: The Restaurant Godagens, Kårhuset.

Introduction Championship January 26, 13.00 – 16.30 Location: Gym Halls 1 and 2, Building of the Department of Health Sciences. The new students will meet and compete in humorous variations of well-known sports. A team of internationals will be formed at the Welcome Dinner. From 19.00 – Party at Kåren with a price ceremony for the winners of the Introduction Championship, disco and buffet. Buy tickets in the Restaurant Godagens in Kårhuset!
