Onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia is the formation or use of words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to. Onomatopoeia can also be thought of as a word that imitates the sound it represents. This sound device can help to bring out the full flavor of words. By comparing and associating syllables which imitate or reproduce the sounds they describe, a word’s meaning may be strengthened.
