Mechanism of action and indications (Why med ordered) Blocks the effects of serotonin at 5-HT3 receptor sites (selective antagonist) located in bagal nerve terminals and the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the CNS. Indicated for prevention of nausea

Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions .Contraindicated in hypersensitivity. May be affected by drugs that alter liver enzymes Common side effects Headache constipation and diarrhea.

D5W, 0.9% NaCl, D5/0.9% NaCl, D5/0.45% NaCl. Solution is clear and colorless. Stable for 7 days at room temperature following dilution. Administer each dose as an IV infusion over 15 min

Nursing Process- Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) assess pt for nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, and bowel sounds

Lab value alterations caused by medicine May cause transient increase in serum bilirubin, AST, and ALT levels. Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Notify physician immediately if involuntary movement of eyes face or limbs occur. Assessment Evaluation Why would you hold or not give this Check after giving med? Prevention of nausea. If pt is experiencing extrapyramidal effects (involuntary movements, facial grimacing rigidity, shuffling walk, trembling of hands)
