Publishing symposium to be held at University of Lincoln __________________ The Event

__________________ The Hub, National Centre for Craft & Design, will be showing a retrospective exhibition of the work of David Hillman in May 2009. The University of Lincoln will be hosting a symposium in connection with this event. Hillman is an icon of British graphic design who has played a fundamental role in the visual nature of international publishing. He has received 16 yellow and two black D&AD pencils, worked with Man Ray and after groundbreaking work for Nova magazine, he went on to work for The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Phaidon Press and The THE. He became a Pentagram partner and is now director of his own studio. The symposium event is scheduled to take place from 10.30am — 3.30pm on Thursday 14th May 2009 in the CoOperative lecture theatre at the University of Lincoln. The symposium’s theme, On Publishing will be opened up by varied foci on matters related, including: The past, present and future of publishing, Publishing in crisis, Women in publishing and Establishment/anti-establishment publishing. The programme will consist of an interview with David Hillman, where he will share his reflections on his long

career in publishing design and offer his thoughts about the future of this practice. This will be supplemented by talks from invited speakers* from academia and industry to be spread across the late morning and early afternoon. It will conclude with an open discussion, Q&A session where a panel of speakers will consider questions submitted in advance, throughout the day, by the audience, as well as delivered vocally on the spot. The University was very successful in the recent RAE exercise and the graphic design department at Lincoln are committed to the ongoing development of research of international significance. Therefore, attendance at the symposium is open to students and academics from the UK with a minimal admission fee of £5. The event is open to designers and others outside academia but space is limited, so early registration is advised. If you have any questions, please direct them to Timothy Donaldson (the email address is in the right column). We invite you to bring your eyes, ears, opinions and voices to Lincoln and join us in what promises to be a unique and significant event.
