Martin Media Relations Office 216-433-2406 [email protected] RELEASE: 05-028 NASA GLENN CONTINUES DAILY SHUTTLE-RELATED TALKS The public is invited to visit NASA's Glenn Research Center, Cleveland each day this weekend and throughout the entire Space Shuttle Discovery's flight to hear about different aspects of Glenn's involvement in the Mission. Each talk will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Glenn's Visitor Center and will follow the day's highlights of activities on STS-114. Following each talk, visitors will have the opportunity to ask the speaker questions. Tomorrow, Saturday, July 30, Tarah Shpargel, a researcher for QSS Group Incorporated at Glenn, will speak about small area repair techniques that have been developed at Glenn. These methods are being studied for repair of small areas of damage that may occur on the outside of the Shuttle. On Sunday, July 31, Anthony Calomino, materials researcher at Glenn, will delve into the microscopic evaluation of the materials that make up the skin of the Shuttle. Calomino's talk will focus on the work being done at Glenn to predict how much the Shuttle material wears out over time. On Monday, August 1, Frank Ritzert, another materials researcher at Glenn, will show the audience the metallic overwrap concept his team at Glenn developed as a possible way to repair large holes. The presentation on Tuesday, August 2 will get down to the "nuts and bolts" of the Shuttle with a talk by Tim Krantz, mechanical engineer with the Army Research Laboratory at Glenn. Krantz will focus on the gears that control movement of the Shuttle's rudder speed brake. Admission to the Visitor Center is free and is wheelchair accessible. During the STS-114 mission the Visitor Center will be open Monday Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Access to the Glenn Visitor Center is limited to U.S. citizens. All adult visitors must present government-issued photo identification upon entering the center's main gate. All vehicles are subject to inspection.
