CITY OF CUPERTINO EARTH DAY ART PROGRAM The City of Cupertino would like to know, in pictures and words, what sustainability means to your child or student. 1. Theme What does sustainability (or sustain-ability) in Cupertino mean to you? Sustainability in Cupertino —what is it? What does it (or should it) look like? Who’s involved? What are the benefits? We present this broad scope to gather all of your ideas and feedback on what makes, or will make, Cupertino a sustainable place to live. 2. Description and Background Students within City of Cupertino are invited to submit their artwork on one standard 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper (post-consumer recycled content please!) with a description of the art in response to the program’s theme/question: “What does sustainability (or sustain-ability) in Cupertino mean to you?” on the reverse side. Cupertino welcomes visual art including paintings, sketches, collage, computer and digital graphics. The City is also interested in art through language including poems, short stories, and narratives with a maximum of one hundred words. 3. Purpose Cupertino is committed to maintaining our City as a sustainable place to live, learn and work for all of our residents. To achieve this goal the City must balance its economic, social and environmental goals to ensure the existing and future prosperity of our community, businesses and natural resources. So the City invites you to join us to chart our course and track our progress to minimize our environmental impacts and maximize our health and welfare as a single, unified community. We are excited to learn how you envision a sustainable Cupertino through art. 4. Eligibility In the spirit of sustainability, this contest will be focused on the City of Cupertino. Local artists between the ages of 5 and 18 are encouraged to submit artwork to be showcased at an “eco-gallery” hosted at the City’s FIRST Earth Day Festival on April 19th to be held at the Quinlan Center and Memorial Park and in a city “virtual art gallery” within a sustainability section of the website, to be launched in April. 5. Deadline Please send or deliver your projects to the Earth Day Festival Art Program, City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue, Cupertino, CA 95014 by Friday, April 10th, 2009 for display at the Earth Day Festival ecogallery. Additional entries may be submitted electronically on an ongoing basis to
[email protected] for display in the “virtual art gallery.”
