O Immaculate Virgin, mother of the true God and mother of the Church! You, who revealed your clemency and your pity to all those who ask for your protection, hear the prayer that we address to you with filial trust, and present it to your Son Jesus, our sole Redeemer. Mother of Mercy, teacher of hidden and silent sacrifice, to you we dedicate on this day all our being and all our love. We also dedicate to you our life, our work, our joys, our infirmities, and our sorrows. Grant peace, justice, and prosperity to our people, for we entrust to your care all that we have and all that we are, our Lady and Mother. We wish to be entirely yours and to walk with you along the way of complete faithfulness to Jesus Christ and his Church: hold us always in your loving hand. Virgin of Guadalupe, Mother of the Americas, we pray to you for all the bishops, that they may lead the faithful along paths of intense Christian life, of love and humble service of God and souls. Grant to our homes the grace of loving and respecting life in its beginnings, with the same love with which you conceived in your womb the life of the Son of God. Blessed Virgin Mary, protect our families, so that they may always be united, and bless the upbringing of our children. Thus, Most Holy Mother, with the peace of God in our conscience, with our hearts free from evil and hatred, we will be able to bring to all true joy and true peace, which come to us from your son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Respect for the dignity of every human life flows from the truth that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God. This basic principle is reflected in the exhortation of our Lord, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” These words from the gospel of Mark, proclaimed on Respect Life Sunday, October 4, take on a special meaning when we realize that our Lord is referring not only to small children but to all his children, no matter how long they have been alive – from mere seconds after conception all the way to eternity. Pope Benedict XVI reinforced this message on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord when he said, “Every child brings us God’s smile.” The Bishops of the United States have chosen that beautiful quotation as the theme for Respect Life Month, October, 2009. Since every human person is created in the image and likeness of God, reverence for life cannot be limited to a few and should be practiced at every moment of our lives. Every moment should give witness to our true concern for life in all aspects: help for the poor, the elderly, the handicapped, and a genuine respect for others. When our actions are performed with conviction, gentleness and true love for the dignity of every human being, God’s plan shines through. We should support genuine healthcare reform which will allow all Americans to receive the medical assistance they require; but any healthcare plan must respect and defend the sanctity of every human life from conception to natural death as well as freedom of conscience for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and health care workers. We work for an end to abortion in our nation and, at the same time, exert ourselves in the pastoral care of young mothers and fathers who may be struggling to make ends meet and deserve genuine Christian concern. We should consciously foster a culture in which the value of a human life does not diminish with age or the inability to take nourishment. The most human and divine reality at the end of life is found in the sacrifice of love shown by mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters and friends. This sacrifice of love is made by accompanying on their entire life journey the most defenseless among us, whether they be in the womb, in a hospital, in a nursing facility or at home. During Respect Life Month, I will remember in my prayers all who have dedicated themselves to defending life from conception to natural death. May Almighty God bless you and keep you in his love! Sincerely in Christ, J. Peter Sartain, Bishop of Joliet

Facts from the Past Did you know… Christ the King School opened in 1963 with only four grades, third through sixth grade. One grade was then added each year until we had a full grade school. The Order of Felician Sisters staffed our school, beginning in 1963 until the early 1980s. Their convent was at 1520 S. Highland Ave., which later was used by the Ray Graham Association for special needs children and adults.

NEW SURVEY: MOST AMERICANS WANT HEALTH CARE REFORM, OPPOSE ABORTION COVERAGE, SUPPORT CONSCIENCE PROTECTION LAWS Two to one: U.S. adults favor ‘reform to provide affordable health insurance for all’ Sixty-eight percent do not want abortion coverage in their own policy, whether public or private sixty-three percent favor keeping conscience protection laws WASHINGTON—A nationwide survey commissioned by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has found widespread public opposition to including abortion in health care reform and majority support for conscience rights protection – views shared by those who favor efforts to pass health care reform. Conducted by International Communications Research (ICR) from September 16-20, 2009, the phone survey of 1,043 U.S. adults found that 60 percent favor – and only thirty percent oppose – “efforts to pass health care reform to provide affordable health insurance for all.” Focusing on that sixty percent, the survey found that: Sixty percent of those favoring reform oppose – and only 25 percent support – “measures that would require people to pay for abortion coverage with their federal taxes.” By a 49-39 percent plurality, those who favor reform oppose “measures that would require people to pay for abortion coverage with their health insurance premiums”; and among those favoring reform, those who favor maintaining “current federal laws that protect doctors and nurses from being forced to perform or refer for abortions against their will” outnumber those who oppose keeping such laws in place by a margin of two to one (60-30). Opposition to abortion coverage was somewhat stronger in the total sample of U.S. adults – for example, 67 percent of the total sample opposed requiring people to pay for abortion coverage through their taxes and 56 percent opposed making them do so through their insurance premiums. The survey also asked: “If the choice were up to you, would you want your own insurance policy to include abortion?” Sixty-eight percent of U.S. adults said ‘No’ and only 24 percent said ‘Yes.’ “The USCCB survey confirms other recent polls conducted by Public Opinion Strategies (August 30-September 1) and Rasmussen Reports (September 14-15) on health care policy and abortion,” said Deirdre McQuade, Assistant Director for Policy & Communications at the USCCB’s Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities. “With each passing week it gets clearer: The American public generally does not want to pay for abortion coverage and does not want health care reform used to promote abortion,” she said. “Abortion is not health care. The bishops of the United States are working hard to ensure that health care reform serves the most vulnerable among us – especially the poor, immigrants, and the unborn,” McQuade said. For more information on the U.S. bishops’ position on health care reform, visit www.usccb.org/healthcare.

LITANY TO MARY, MOTHER OF LIFE Mary, Mother of all Life, help us to respect human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. R. MARY PRAY FOR US! Mary, Mother of Compassion, You showed us how valuable a single life can be; help us to guard and protect the lives of all people entrusted to our care. R. Mary, Mother of the Child Jesus, with St. Joseph you formed the Holy Family; guard and protect all families in this earthly life. R. Mary, Mother Most Holy, You sanctified the vocation of motherhood; pour out your heavenly aid on all mothers and help them to be holy. R. Mary, Mother of Sorrows, Simeon’s prophecy foretold that a sword of suffering would pierce your heart; bring comfort and hope to all mothers who suffer over their children. R. Mary, Full of Grace, You had a choice in responding to God’s call; help us always to say “Yes” to the will of God in our lives, and strive always to do whatever he tells us. R. Mary, Comforter of the Afflicted, Pour forth your heavenly grace on all who are in need of God’s healing, Especially those involved in abortion; help them to experience the love and mercy of Christ, your Son. R. Mary, Intercessor and Advocate, We lift up the poor, the displaced, the marginalized and vulnerable members of society; help them to never abandon hope, but to place their trust in the God who gave them life. R. Mary, Mother of the Word Incarnate, you bore in your womb him whom the heavens cannot contain; help us to bear witness to Christ by the example of our lives And show the world the extravagant love of God. R. All: Remember, o most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, we fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer them. Amen.

PADS News We'd like to send out a very special thank you to all of our parishoners who donated a gift for the PADS Birthday Party in August. Because of your generosity, it was a great success and a very special evening for all of our needy guests. They were so appreciative to receive a personal gift and this would not have been possible without the wonderful community of Christ the King who were thoughtful enough to help us with this special event. Over the last few months we have seen large growth in the amount of guests that come to our shelter every third Sunday of the month, including more families than ever before. Please pray for all of those in DuPage and elsewhere who are homeless and in need of so much during these difficult times. Thank you Jarrod & Martha Cebulski CTK PADS Coordinators

Mrs. Luedtke has done a great job in the library! She is there on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:30-noon to have children visit and check out books! We love her Author of the Month, books on loan, estimating activities and crafts! We are lucky to have her at the Academy! The Academy students love going to the Learning Chapel for prayers, stories, and the Pledge of Allegiance. We are doing a great job with The Sign of the Cross, The Our Father, and The Lord Is Good To Me. We have had activities with bean bags and rhythm sticks. The kindergarten started piano this week and had a wonderful time! We are very busy with fall themes, cooking and art projects. We are looking to create a grant fund for needy families. Please consider a donation for Catholic education-call 630-627-0640 and ask for Mrs. Placey. May God bless you and keep you safe, The Academy Staff. The Administration Commission in the September 20 bulletin announced an opportunity for you to commemorate an event or to have a lasting remembrance of your loved one or in thanksgiving by having your name and theirs engraved on a brick to be placed around the Ten Commandment monument. The bricks will completely surround the monument. There will also be benches for you to sit. Our goal is to have a place for reflection not only for the present generation of parishioners but also for future generations. Your contribution will help our parish meet the cost of repairs and maintenance. It will also help in making extraordinary payment towards reducing the Parish mortgage. We will accept your contribution until the end of this year. We would encourage you to make your decision as early as possible as we need to refine the design and placement of the bricks. Your contribution is tax deductible. Please help us and the parish achieve our goal. In the Joliet Diocese our Parish is the only community with a Ten Commandment/Beatitude monument. If you have any questions please send your email to
[email protected] or leave your name and phone number at the rectory (630) 629-1717 x0 and we will get in touch with you. The form can be sent to the rectory with your information. Additional order forms can be obtained at the website www.CTKlombard .org or at the Church Narthex. Let us be grateful for the past, celebrate the present and wisdom for the future, through Christ our King. Happy and Holy anniversary Christ the King parishioners. Administration Commission
