About the Artists

Steve Swanson is an author and clergyman from Northfield. He is a graduate of Northfield High School and of St. Olaf College, and completed graduate work at Luther Seminary in St. Paul and at the University of Oregon, where he received his masters and PhD. Swanson has taught all over the U.S. at colleges and has ministered in many congregations in the U.S. and Canada. When he is not busy serving as an interim Lutheran pastor at area churches, he engages in metal sculpture.

Mike Legvold is an instrumental music teacher in the Cannon Falls school system. He performs regularly with the Up North Brass Quintet and the Lake Wobegon® Brass Band, a British Brass Band based in Anoka. Mike is a graduate of St. Olaf College and recently completed a Masters Degree in music at the University of Minnesota. An almost

4 lifelong Northfield resident, he lives in Northfield with his wife Tania and son Kai.

Meet the Conductor

Paul Niemisto is the founder and conductor of the Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra, which marks its 27th year in 2006. Dr. Niemisto is a member of the St. Olaf College music faculty. He received his doctorate from the University of Minnesota and also studied at the Mozarteum International Summer Academy in Salzburg and at the American Symphony Orchestra League Institute. Since 1991 he has directed the Finnish-American brass ensemble “Ameriikan Poijat” (Boys of America). In 2006 he organized the Vintage Band Festival and International Wind Music History Symposium held in Northfield.

The CVRO The Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra was founded in 1979 by Paul Niemisto. Its mission is to present orchestral and wind concerts to audiences in the region and to provide performance opportunities for trained musicians. Each year the orchestra performs 5 or 6 concerts with musicians from communities throughout the Cannon Valley area. Interested performers should contact the Northfield Arts Guild at (507) 645-8877. An Exciting CVRO season The Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra, conducted by Paul Niemisto, will present four concert programs for the 2006-2007 season. For more specific details on the season, please visit our website at www.cvrorchestra.org. • This first presentation is entitled “Tell Me A Story” and will be performed at the new Northfield Middle School Auditorium on Sunday, October 29, at 2 p.m. This concert is especially designed for family audiences and will be educational and entertaining for all ages. Listening through a cavalcade of orchestral music, we will learn how music is often inspired by good stories. Admission is $5 for adults, children free. No advance sales. • On December 16 and 17, the CVRO will return for the third season to collaborate with the Continental Ballet in two performances of Tchaikowsky’s immortal Nutcracker Ballet (“La Casse Noisette”). These performances will take place at Red Wing’s Historic Sheldon Theatre, a veritable replica of the house where the Nutcracker was first performed about a century ago. In 2005, the production featured dance artists for St. Petersburg, Russia, in the solo roles. Performances are on Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 3:00. For more ticket information contact the Sheldon at 1-800-899-5759 or visit www.sheldontheatre.org. • On Sunday, March 11, the CVRO will offer a chamber orchestra concert at the Bethel Lutheran Church, 1050 Cedar Ave., beginning at 7 p.m. This concert will feature a performance of Spanish composer Joachim Rodrigo’ s very famous “Fantasia para un gentilhombre” with virtuoso Northfield guitarist Kim Bloom. Also on the program with be a regional premier performance of a new “Children’s Canatata” by British composer John Rutter, with the collaboration of the Hymnus Choir of New Prague, directed by Brian Carson. Admission is $5 for adults, children free. No advance sales. • On Saturday evening, May 19, 7:30 p.m., the CVRO will return to the Sheldon in Red Wing to perform as a part of their season’s concert series. This event, entitled “Voices of Spring” will feature orchestral repertoire from France. In addition to music of Debussy, Ravel, and Bizet, the concert will include a flute concerto performed by CVRO principal flute Sandra Gallagher.
